Today I was notified by Windows Update that the 2004 update is finally ready to be downloaded and installed on my laptop. I pressed download and install and left the laptop plugged in idle as I did not have any laptop work to do at that time. Now it's been 4 hours since I left it on, and the Windows Update screen (in the Settings > Updates & Security) is still at 94% installing, which is the exact number I saw more than an hour ago. Is it stuck? Why is it taking so long to install? My internet is fast enough, I don't have many programs installed apart from a few essentials such as Office and Inkscape along with other credible software. I am afraid that if I close it and reset the Windows Update, it'll take 4+ hours again (not to mention the additional lengthy rebooting and installing the update again in the blue background screen which happens with every single update), plus it's already night here so I cannot leave it turned on while I go to sleep.

It wasn't automatic; I manually downloaded the update. I read the Microsoft health dashboard and none of the officially mentioned issues affected me or my usage, plus it was originally blocked for my system, and only today I was allowed to download it, so I though it was safe now. I have 122 GB free from 249 GB in my C drive, if that matters.
I would like to understand exactly why the 2004 process seems to touch every single file and every single device driver and every aspect of my PC's while it "updates." What's going on here? I actually got through the process on each of my 8 machines (desktops and notebooks) after 6 to 8 to 12 hours, and NOTHING seems to have improved or changed. Except Edge is now thoroughly weaved into the system and is irremovable. I don't use Edge. Won't use Edge. Don't want Edge. I don't use OneDrive. Won't use OneDrive. I don't want OneDrive. What's going on here? What else is going on here? I don't think it's a question of "What ever happened to Microsoft." I'd like to know what instrumentation they have installed on my computer.
Okay, I will. I'll probably leave it on for another hour or so until bedtime, if it's not done by then I'll just turn off the laptop (there is no 'update and shut down' option in power menu yet, just normal shut down) and try again tomorrow.
Thanks Susan, i was surprised that my 3rd attempt went so well. Glad you got yours done. I am surprised at how much this update improved the look of the OS. I had no issues with performance before but now it seems very snappy. Haven't encountered any major bugs yet. Im very pleased
3-4 days! wow! I guess I got lucky that it just took overnight. Thanks, it looks like lots of people are having this long install problem.
