Windows live mail error 0X800C013E after feature 2004

This would be fine if Mail did what I need it to do, but it is like using a child's spade to move a sand dune.  It does not have any facility for setting up mail groups, the contacts have to be done through a separate app, which in any case refuses to load my contacts.  Half my emails are missing.  The list of things which this useless mail app will not do are endless.  Outlook is very little better.  What made you think that the world wanted to stop sending emails.

I have a disk image that I refresh every 3 months. I also have a daily non incremental backup. Last week after getting the error, I corrupted slightly WLM while experimenting a solution which did not work. Fortunately I was able to restore all of WLM from the daily backup and I may have lost a few emails which had arrived in my inbox after the most recent backup. WLM is one of the most important applications that I use (32000 emails in many folders) and without having Microsoft support, I feel very vulnerable when something breaks on it. The original storage folder has migrated from Win XP to Vista to Win8 to Win10, and the file structure file names have grown to nearly 256 characters long, and are close to breaking. Any new folders that I now create, I do so under the DRAFT box and then I drag the new folders into the existing fragile old storage folder structure. This allows me to continue growing the WLM structure without breaking down.

My experience with Microsoft's feature updates has been very mixed.

I had to wait for 3 months to get a fix for the feature update that disabled the brightness control on more than one of my personal PCs. I had a choice to roll the update back or get stronger sun glasses.

For future reference, Win10 Home will allow you to suspend updates for a few weeks.

In the past, you could disable updates over metered connections, then set the metered attribute on all your internet connections (I have not tried it recently).

In the past I have found Microsoft's rollback feature to be unreliable. There are some good free 3rd party disk image programs available. I image my system disk regularly and always before a feature update!

While this error is on my partners PC I am trying to resolve.

I will consider your point about WLM sometimes you just have to change.

In the mean time to get email working I propose to uninstall the update ( I don't know how it got updated by itself). Then I need to prevent it updating for a while in the future. Is there an easy method other than turning the WiFi feature to "charged".

I will then persuade her to go with Windows mail or Gmail whichever she wishes.
