Security Update KB5034441 for Windows 10 Ver. 22H2 will not install.

I'm waiting to find out how many users get hacked because of the delay in getting a functional patch for this issue. Hackers will find this an opportunity to reach a lot of unprotected Windows systems. This patch is yet another example of the limited testing that Microsoft is doing these days.

Part of the cause of the recovery partition's physical location on a drive has to do with various system installers using any and all disk drives that are available at installation time. UEFI systems are vulnerable to this, but this allocation issue goes back earlier than Windows XP, definitely a pre-UEFI issue. I typically install both Windows and Linux onto separate drives if only to prevent losing both systems when a drive has partitions from other operating systems on it. I usually open up the PC and disconnect every other drive than the one I want to install to.

I'm actually doing this stuff at home but I used to do professional computer support. This is not stuff for amateurs. I really dislike the usual Microsoft debugging recommendations that include re-installing Windows since this blows away various fixes and customizations that I do.

I am receiving error 0x80070643 (KB5034441) and 0x80073701 (KB5034122)

Two other minor updates successfully installed besides these two major ones.

I ran troubleshooter for Windows update numerous times and this does not fix the issue - i have 7 computers stalled on doing patches and updates now - when will this be addressed?

I will add to this thread as I am having the same issues and did everything except for the repartitioning. This computer is my livelihood, I will not risk messing up my system for something that should be installed easily like all other updates. Microsoft, fix this update!

I also have this problem and don't have the skills or nerve to mess around with the disc configuration or run any strange scripts.

I have checked the recovery drive size WinRE and it has 550mb of free space - so already more than this update needs...

So it really does need MS to fix it

Plus Is there a way of just stopping it from trying to update every time I switch the computer on... or can we ask MS to just withdraw it...

After searching, and others mentioning this specific step, I gave it a try on the one system that was unable to successfully install KB5034441. After following the process the update completed successfully. Here's the link to the KB article that outlines the steps.

I don't, personally, think that this is something that Microsoft should expect end-users to do--those in corporate environments, with IT specialists is a different story compared to a home user. These steps are something that, as part of the update installation, should be checked first and then, as necessary the appropriate steps taken AFTER notifying the end-user that this additional step will be taken and then afterwards performing the update. Of course as part of that check there needs to be verification that there is sufficient disk space available for the change in partitioning. If there isn't sufficient space the appropriate--detailed--information needs to be provided as to why a particular (in this case KB5034441) cannot be completed.

If you feel that these steps are something you are uncomfortable completing yourself, then, as far as I concerned--and I believe in this instance Microsoft Support would take the same view--support through Microsoft should be available free of any charge as it is their issue to resolve (they created in to begin with!).
