Windows 10 says I have no internet connection, but I have.

I am running on Windows 10 Enterprise, Version 2004, OS Build 19041.264.

I recently changed to the Windows Insider Program and updated Windows. In the taskbar, the Wi-Fi icon shows No Internet Access, but I have a stable internet connection wirelessly (Ex: I can browse the internet, ping IP Addresses, etc.). Another problem is when I try to open Cortana it also says that I have no internet connection (By the way, I can also open Microsoft's website).

As I know Windows checks internet connectivity with this URL: http://msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt. But this gives Error 404, File Not Found. Maybe it is because of this?

If you know the problem or an answer, please help. Thanks!

Hello, use Registry Editor, go to: 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet

and modify: EnableActiveProbing

then change "Value data" from "0" to "1"

and restart your computer

The proper one is

"HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\” -Name UseGlobalDNS -PropertyType DWORD -Value 1 -Force

But the more appropriate way to do this is not through registry directly, but through group policy config:

    I have got a solution adding a key from PS

    New-ItemProperty -Path “HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\” -Name UseGlobalDNS -PropertyType DWORD -Value 1 -Force

    I appreciate your help within this thread, and have been lurking trying to find the solution with relation to the NCSI displaying no internet at random intervals after connecting to Pulse Secure VPN and have raised the ticket with them who recommended opening a ticket with Microsoft.

    I have been experiencing this fairly frequently in my organization, and currently have a case opened with Microsoft for it. I have sent traces, and they recommended enabling the UseGlobalDNS key = 1 in the registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet. I had enabled this prior to opening the case from reading this thread.

    According to the tech, the DNS response never arrives at the machine at random causing the No Internet to be displayed by NCSI, and they recommended I add the UseGlobalDNS registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet.

    Do both of these keys need to be configured for it to function properly?

    I like the idea of adding the routes to the host file.

    By any chance, do you utilize a VPN? If so, does the host file get overwritten when you connect to the VPN?

    I did the following steps that you wrote and it works for me after days with trying a bunch of other solutions such as editing registry, reinstall drivers and updates,... Just logged in to say thank you a lot :D

    run notepad as administrator

    file > open

    go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

    change the file types to All Files (*.*) so you can see it

    hosts should be in the list, open it

    go to the bottom of the file

    add a blank line to the bottom, then add the following two lines (you may be able to get away with just the second one, but it cant hurt to add both)

    13.107.4.52 www.msftconnecttest.com

    13.107.4.52 msftconnecttest.com

    add a blank line at the bottom under these (dont leave the entry as the last line or it may not work)

    save it

    close notepad

    restart windows
