Windows crashing after clicking PERFORMANCE tab under Task Manager

Hello Windows Community folks

Windows 10 keeps crashing after I click Performance TAB in Task Manager. It crashes the windows going into the infamous Green screen with reason- Windows preview build failed. I have tried several debug options like cmd SFC Scan, DISM.

I have not specifically touched registry keys as I am afraid I will end up breaking something else.

What options do I have? Please suggest.

this helped for me,

I changed

NVIDIA System Control > 3D Settings > Global Settings > Preferred GPU

from "NVIDIA high performance processor"

back to "auto select"

    Just want to drop this here. My laptop is a W530 Lenovo ThinkPad. I had the same problem after updating to 2004 & 20H2. I tracked it down to the Nvidia Quadro k1000m driver. Windows uses a default driver that is older than the version you can find from the Nvidia website. Here is the link.

    Hey Microsoft! I've been dealing with this issue since my laptop updated during the summer of 2020! Fix this issue already!

    Thanks for the input, unfortunately in my case my laptop is a W520 with a Quadro 1000m (no k) which this driver version says is incompatible when run ... 377.55 was the latest version I could find that installed and it did not fix the problem ... I don't think MS will fix it as newer versions of the driver fix it on newer systems and they probably look at my system a archaic, also I have seen this issue with a couple of other software programs so in may be an older NVidia driver problem ... fortunately I have the alternate graphics chipset (Intel HD Graphics 3000) and it works with that one ... even if this system is old (circa 2010, 2011?) it still runs everything just fine for what I use it for including win 10. I'm sure it is a good useful solution for newer machines (or video chipsets).

    Similar problem - task manager crashes when selecting the Performance tab. On windows pro 2004. Haven't been able to fix it , but there is a workaround - use Process Explorer instead . It works fine and actually has far more , and more useful, performance information.

    I had a similar issue for my laptop after a windows update, my task manager used to crash when I take the performance tab. I just got it fixed right now. May be this step will be helpful. 

    Below are the steps i did

    1. I took the NVIDIA control panel
    2. I selected Manage 3d settings from the right panel.

    See the below diagram for your reference. In the  Programm settings (Left side), I selected task manager and the preferred graphics processor as NVIDIA. For me Integrated graphics was selected as default. After applying this change, now I am not facing any issues

    I managed to fix the task manager crashes after a lot of trial and error. 

    To do that I had to install a 3rd party driver update utility. The one I used was driverdoc - a free application - although the free version only updates one driver before having to reboot. Apparently the official HP site for my laptop does not have the most updated drivers. This worked for 2 different HP laptops I own.

    Only issue remaining with the task manager is the empty startup page - not sure if anything short of a full reset would resolve that...
