Airpods Pro: very bad quality in Headset mode on Windows 10

Dear all,

I've got my new Airpods Pro, they work well with my iPhone.

Also on Windows 10 via bluetooth, sound quality is good when using the "Airpods stereo" mode.

However, in the headset mode ("Airpods Hands-Free AG Audio") sound and especially microphone quality is extremely bad. I tried to change the default format (see screenshot, it's only 8000Hz), but I cannot change it as it's grey. Any advice to get a better microphone quality?

According to this post it should be fixed already in Insiders Build (currently Dev Channel only).

I'm struggling with this issue with a Picun P80S as well. Microphone is at 8000hz and unable to change the quality. I also have a Jabra Evolve 75 with this USB Dongle Jabra Link 370 and I've perfect microphone quality. I tried to connect the Jabra Evolve 75 directly via Bluetooth (without the dongle) and I had 16000hz!

Is there somehow a way we can choose a driver for a device manually?

I am not an expert, but I do see different BT headsets behave differently on the same Windows system (not even mentioning other devices such as IOS, Mac or Android).

ok, with Plantronics comes a BT dongel (USB), so I could imagine that this also loads a plantronics driver in Windows, to enabble good Mic Sound input ( miles better than via Mic from AirPods Pro). But what I do not understand is, why Windows does not allow the user to define the Audio input quality from the Mic coming via standard BT device/driver.

Hi,

I would simply like to understand why my Airpods conntects with my desktop Lenovo Desktop PC using 8000Hz and with my HP Laptop using 16000hz for the mic.

BT drivers and Windows set-up quite similar. Capability of Windows and BT totally out of question, both can connect the Airpods with acceptable Hands-Free quality.

So what might be the difference between my machines? BT chipset (both Intel)? What makes Windows to pick the 8000hz connection? Sound driver, Codec, chipset, ....??

If only you understood how little Windows has to do with Bluetooth ...

Bluetooth is actually a network technology. The network exists between your headset and the Bluetooth adapter in your computer, neither of which come from Microsoft. The driver for your Bluetooth adapter also doesn't come from Microsoft. The codecs also don't come from Microsoft.

Windows' role in all of this is to host the Bluetooth service, for example to provide an interface for the components. The pairing, the connecting, the profiles ... that's all Bluetooth. The stack that provides the functionality ... all Bluetooth.

It took me weeks to figure out how to use my Bluetooth earbuds correctly. Not that the vendor (Soundcore) was much help. Didn't do me any favors. I had to learn this on my own ... how Bluetooth works, how to use it correctly. Now that I understand, my earbuds work fabulously. The sound quality is amazing.

People love to blame Microsoft for everything. And it's not like Microsoft doesn't deserve blame, but not for everything. And not for people who don't understand how Bluetooth operates and how to make it work for you.
