Microsoft store won't let me install apps on my D:\ drive

So I was trying out the Xbox Game Pass for PC and I was going to install Sea Of Theives and Astroneer.

I first downloaded Astroneer to my C:\ (my ssd) and it worked out because it is around 3 GB it fit.

However, when I was going to install Sea Of Theives I had to change my default drive from C:\ to D:\ (my hdd) because I couldn't fit it on my ssd.

It downloaded fine, but when it was trying to install the game, it just stopped and said "Error" instead on installing. Then instead of the "Play" button there is a button called "See details". When I clicked it, a popup comes up saying: "Something unexpected happened. Reporting this problem will help us understand it better. You can wait for a while and try again or restart your device. That may help. Code: 0x80070005"

That is the code for "Access denied" which is strange, why wouldn't Microsoft Store have access to install apps on my computer?

I have tried updating windows to the latest update, I have reset the Microsoft Store and I have tried to give the group "Everyone" access to the folder that Microsoft Store is installing in. Without any success.

To summarise, I can install apps from Microsoft Store to my C:\ drive (ssd), but not to my D:\ (hdd). It downloads fine, but when it tries to install I get the following error: "Something unexpected happened. Reporting this problem will help us understand it better. You can wait for a while and try again or restart your device. That may help. Code: 0x80070005".

Hi Erik,

Please rename the folder WindowsApps in Drive D to WindowsApps.old, restart your computer, It should work after renaming it.

Hello i have the same problem. After renaming the folder to WindowsApps.old, and restarting the computer it changed nothing. When i press the install but to install Forza horizon 4 And choose the D: drive it still does nothing. And it wont let me set the default folder to D: Please help!

Ok, I just invented the solution that worked for me after all the solutions seen on forums didnt worked.

So you need to create a new partition from your drive that isnt seen by Xbox App/Microsoft store like this:

You press on Shrink volume ( to create an unallocated region on your hard disk ), then you allocate the new space to a new letter (you make the new partition) you select NTFS and you are done. ENJOY!

Hi there

I hope this will work for you and everyone else as it worked for me.
I tried several times to reinstall Windows but it would NEVER work. It would always grey out my install button and if I wanted to change the default app install location it would tell me the error code "0x80070005" Access Denied.

The solution is actually really foolish...
FIX:

Step 1: Go to the directory where you want to install your apps/games.
Step 2: Look for the 2 folders called WpSystem AND WindowsApps. (Make sure you make a backup of those folders if you have any data on there.)

Step 3: Delete WpSystem AND WindowsApps.
Step 4: Go to Windows Store and install whatever app/game you want to install.
Step 5: Choose the drive you want the app/game to.
Step 6: Click Install!

Hopefully this worked for you as it worked for me.

Hello guys,

after long hours of searching how to resolve this same problem, i managed it with :
1. Rename "WindowsApps" to "Windowsapps.old"
2. reboot (not sure if it's necessary)
3. Delete "WpSystem" folder
After this, i was able to download Sea Of Thieves on my D: folder...

Dudes, this windows store system is so painful... Why not do it as simple as Steam ?!?!

(Happens to me 3 times i had a windows 10 update which made me to reinstall windows, and i have to download everything again, espacially Sea Of Thieves with my 13Mb sh** DSL connection ............. )
