This package includes monthly updates and fixes to the Windows Defender antimalware platform that is used by Windows Defender Antivirus in Windows 10.
Monthly updates are installed in addition to major Windows 10 releases. Both types of updates should be installed to ensure continued protection against malware and other threats.

The Windows updates must surely fix bugs as well as provide software upgrades.
My complaint is why the default setting is not for updates to be added when shutting down, rather than when opening the PC or during work; and then only noticeable because the PC suddenly slows down dramatically.
Then you have uninstall the update.
There's a way to get to the recovery screen from inside Win10, and I think it's from the Update screen in Settings, but you can also get there by powering the machine up and down 3 times from the power switch.
You may also have to roll Windows back to a previous set-point, a recovery point. You may lose some mail, but it's better than losing everything.
You claim that it is an optional update, but I would like to point out that with Windows 10 it is not possible to exclude and / or choose updates, so when a user finds an update to be made it is very likely that he would consider it necessary.
There are indeed optional updates. These are C/D releases. From my prior post:

These preview releases contain only non-security updates, and are intended to provide visibility and testing of the planned non-security fixes targeted for the next month’s Update Tuesday release.
