'Resolving Hosts' issue in Chrome and other browsers now occurs almost daily

About 3 weeks ago I first saw 'resolving hosts' in Chrome when pages weren't loading, or were taking several minutes to load. The same thing was happening in Firefox and Edge at the same time.  At that time a reboot seemed to fix it. 

Since then it's happened frequently, every few days. I tried a number of things and at first these sometimes seemed to be working, sometimes with a reboot:

  • Changed to public DNS for TCP/IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • Cycling modem and router
  • Clearing browser caches
  • Flushing PC cache
  • Made sure Chrome page preload was off
  • Checked host file
  • Not using a VPN or proxy server
  • Turned off port scan/DoS protection in router (previous router)

Now I'm encountering 'resolving hosts' almost every single day. Sometimes it happens when I first turn on the PC in the morning. Sometimes in the middle of the day when I'm working, it will suddenly start.

The only thing that now works reliably is typing this in a command window and rebooting:

netsh int ip reset

Can someone please help me get to the root of this problem? I'd never seen it before about 3-3.5 weeks ago.

    My PC crashed last week after its major update of Windows 10 and the Edge browser. System crashed. My CPU utilization in Task Manager showed 100%, basically frozen, and no programs or browsers would load. Not sure of an approach to take after running diagnostics, I took the drastic step of re-installing a new version of Windows, which of course wiped out all of my programs, passwords, shortcuts, etc. i saw someone mention Malwarebytes as an issue. I’ve run MW Premium along with McAfee (with MW exception files noted) for years without any conflicts or effect on my system. What changed? So in an act of desperation, I removed MW, loaded Chrome with the Mcafee Web Advisor activated and — presto, issue solved!

    Not a very positive experience with Windows. Started shopping for an iMac.

    What is CMD? I have this problem and have tried every advise without help. 

    CMD is an abbreviation for "Command Window". Assuming you're running Win10, type "Command" in the "Type here to search" box in the lower left corner of your screen. At the top of the list of matching commands that pops up, you should see "Command Prompt". Right-click on that and select "Run as Administrator". If your Administrator account is password protected, you'll have to enter that password. A window titled "Administrator Command Prompt" should open. Now you can type in the commands listed in the earlier posts.

    Just received an email from MWB tech support. They just released an update to MWB on May 29th, 2020. Download this and try it out. I've been trying it for two days and no resolving host issue. However, it's slow to load websites. I cleared cached. We'll see.

    I have had similar success. Time will tell...
