'Resolving Hosts' issue in Chrome and other browsers now occurs almost daily

About 3 weeks ago I first saw 'resolving hosts' in Chrome when pages weren't loading, or were taking several minutes to load. The same thing was happening in Firefox and Edge at the same time.  At that time a reboot seemed to fix it. 

Since then it's happened frequently, every few days. I tried a number of things and at first these sometimes seemed to be working, sometimes with a reboot:

  • Changed to public DNS for TCP/IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • Cycling modem and router
  • Clearing browser caches
  • Flushing PC cache
  • Made sure Chrome page preload was off
  • Checked host file
  • Not using a VPN or proxy server
  • Turned off port scan/DoS protection in router (previous router)

Now I'm encountering 'resolving hosts' almost every single day. Sometimes it happens when I first turn on the PC in the morning. Sometimes in the middle of the day when I'm working, it will suddenly start.

The only thing that now works reliably is typing this in a command window and rebooting:

netsh int ip reset

Can someone please help me get to the root of this problem? I'd never seen it before about 3-3.5 weeks ago.

    I'm so very sorry to hear that, tejask1!  I reformatted my entire drive and then reinstalled everything except Malwarebytes (I use Norton Security). So far I am having zero issues. I'm glad I reformatted my drive, because what you are saying suggests the possibility, that this may be malware that has embedded itself into more than just Malwarebytes.

    i don't use malwareBytes but facing the same issue.

    This is happening here even after fresh install of latest Windows 10 without any antivirus or other programs installed..

    Seems like the problem is finally getting some airtime. I’m not a techie, but another suggestion to compensate for MWBP, software that is essentially now defunct, is to turn on the McAfee WebAdvisor in Chrome Settings. I believe it will provide a degree of web surfing, malware-hunting protection. It would be nice to hear from the MWB folks, but don’t count on it, or an admission that their products were never shock tested on the W10 upgrade beta releases.

    Techs: please weigh in here, for the common good.
