Windows 10 extremely slow after updating to 1909

I have been using a PC with 800 M Hz AMD Phennom II processor and 8 GB RAM running 64-bit Windows 10 for several years. It has been running great until recently it became extremely slow after Windows update since November.  I noticed that the CPU and Memory usage changed from about 50% to close to 100%. The performance resumed after I restored the system to the earlier version. Today was the 3rd time I did this and I checked the current stable version is 1903, so I guess the problem was caused by the new update 1909. I am afraid it will become slow again after the automatic update. 

Please advise if there is a way to allow me continue to use this computer.

Hello,

Please try these suggestions:

Run System File Checker scan:

  1. Search for 'command prompt' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type sfc /scannow command and press Enter key.
  4. Let the command complete and then reboot the machine.

If that doesn't works, try these steps:

  1. Search for 'windows powershell' using Cortana or Windows Search.
  2. From results, choose Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  3. Then type/paste following and press Enter key:

Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth

  1. Let the command complete, restart your system then.

If problem continues, perform clean boot and remove third-party programs slowing down your system:

Also, try updating to Version 2004 or latest version and see if it helps.

    hi there:

    1903 is like 1909. So, 1909 didn't cause your issue. I have been using 1909 since it came out and found no issues like yours. Did you have SSD for your device? If not, that is one reason why your Windows 10 is slow. You can install SSD and try it out. Maybe the processor is causing the issue too. Slow processor.

    I am running i5 and SSD still it so slow even file explorer takes time to open like it take setting app to jump across the options on the settings

    Your Phenom 2 should not be running at 800mhz.

    exactly same like what I have several days back.

    this lastest update is truly drive me nuts, booting was like forever,many times lag here and there, I cant do my work properly with my laptop again.

    Skype closed by itself, clean this and that, still same.

    i5 5300U-16GB RAM-512GB SSD-W10 1909.

    Hi guys I just wanted to give an update since so many people have the same problem. I finally ordered an inexpensive Dell refurbished desktop with i5 and 8 GB RAM that performs as expected so far.  For the old PC, the performance became much better after I ran a Registry Cleaner, but the problem still returned after several days, then one day the first cleaner stuck with one registry and I tried another cleaner which worked again. I hope this information helps. 

    Hey Sony_2020, thanks for the tip on the Registry Cleaner.  Please share which product(s) you're using.  I've run CCleaner with minimal success.

    I first tried Asmwsoft PC Optimizer. It worked at beginning but got stuck (could not remove one registry) one day and could no longer improve the performance. Then I tried CCleaner, which worked until I retired the old PC.
