BUG in feature update to windows 10 version 1909 via enablement package (KB4517245)

At work we have had to uninstall the 1909 feature UPDATE on ALL pc's. At first we thought we had a virus of some sort, because after an update and reboot all that worked was the monitor. no keyboard, mouse or network. 

I stumbled onto the update issue and tried it and uninstalling that feature worked. now that Microsoft is FORCING us off of windows 7, we have to go to 10, even though we don't want too.

my problem is when you update a computer from windows 7 to windows 10 during install it installs the 1909 update and then you are stuck. if you uninstall it, it takes you back to windows 7 and you are back where you started.  there has to be a way to get 10 on a laptop/computer without the install updating automatically so we can pause or stop updates until a fix comes out.

My PC updated from Windows 7 just fine. In 2015, which is when you should have migrated. My work PC updated from 7 to 10 earlier this year with 0 issues too. You guys must be doing something very wrong. Given that you're only just updating I'm willing to bet the drivers and BIOSes on the affected PCs aren't even up to date.

We just did the unselect everything method you posted and reselected the items in the list from clicking modify. Uncheck the boxes. Close out. Modify again. Click show all locations. Recheck everything but C drive one. Restarted the PC. It is currently working but only time will tell over the next few business days if it breaks again.

Fingers crossed! Only 1 of my 5 Windows 10 1909+ machines had this problem, and this fixed it for good. Cheers!

Click on your start menu and start typing the word Control and you should see Control Panel show up as an option to click on and view. Its the old school control panel back from windows XP days. Or you can open file explorer and in the path area type Control Panel and it will open that way. A shortcut to the indexing option itself is when you click the start menu start typing Indexing and you will see  Indexing Options with control panel in small lettering under it. When I say click the start menu, bottom left click it, when it opens with the list of apps and such just start typing on your keyboard and it does a search. If you are one that has the big search bar in your taskbar then you can click in there and start typing. Hope this helps.

With all that being said. One of my coworkers came to me a few hours ago and said this fix lasted about 4 business days for him and it broke again. So he is going to rebuild it again and see how it goes. He only has the issue when trying to open a file in an Adobe product like photoshop or illustrator when using the top right area to search for a specific file in a folder.

Not sure if folks are missing this or not, but I keep repeating it: You'll most likely also have to modify the indexing options to ensure only valid locations are being indexed. I think the update changed some of the storage location unique IDs and so indexing is being attempted for locations that no longer exist (kind of like FedEx trying to deliver to an address that now has a new street name.) I'm not sure rebuilding by itself fixes the problem, but I know for sure in my case that unchecking all the indexed locations and rechecking only the valid ones (the UI will tell you if a location in invalid on mouseover) fixed it permanently for me.
