Host Process For Windows Taskhostw.exe Stopped Working: Event ID 1000

I noticed upon checking my Event Log Applications and my Reliability Monitor I have been getting this critical error about every 2 to 3 days now on my HP Omen i7 -16 GB Mem - Nvidia GEForce GTX 1070 on Win10 Home 64 bit and this did not start happening until I updated to v1903 on May 30^th^ . My build is 18362.239. Could someone please advise me as how to resolve this or MS deploy a fix for this. It appears I am not the only one getting these. I have reported this through the Feedback Hub. I have run all three DISMs, SFC, Malwarebytes, Norton and I turned on Windows Defender long enough for a quick scan and no problems seen. It appears this is a scheduled task that keeps failing instead of running to completion.

No... not going anywhere as long as there is a chance of solving this :-). I'm not sure what you mean by tasks but I wasn't even sitting at the computer when it happened. I've just made it a habbit checking.

Regarding .NET Framework 4.8: the only thing marked as running is TCP Port sharing under WCF Services. As for .NET Framework 3.5 it looks like it should be partially active but nothing is marked further in.

So, some update on my errors. I got another Host error this morning so the jiggery-pokery (how does that translate into Danish?) I did with the .Net Framework didn't work. You could try it if you want (if I could ever find a way to PM you) but I don't want to post it here.

By 'tasks' I meant 'Were you writing a Word Document, Surfing the Web...' - that sort of thing. Funnily enough, I had seen that at least twice I was sure I wasn't at the computer when it happened (usually, I haven't the foggiest what I was doing).

Today, I went back to work out what I was doing when the Host error occurred. My Google History showed me that I'd just accessed an article to read 6 minutes prior - I started to scroll through the first few paragraphs reading when the wife called me in to look at an error she was getting on her regular data back ups (more on that in a minute).

Five minutes after that, my Screen Saver kicks in and that's when the Host error took place. Now, my Screen Saver accesses a file in the Windows Directory that needs permission to copy in or delete from.

My wife's error was just plain weird - it was the very same directory that my Screen Saver accesses (but on her computer, not mine) and it was the first time that that source of photos had been written to or deleted from for a fair few weeks.

She got no sensible error message from the program but I copied the files manually to resolve the issue and the back up worked (albeit with no changes). It was only when I saw my error message at the time my Screensaver kicked in that I realised that the same folder could be responsible.

So, I have now stopped the Screensaver from starting up and have made the computer switch the screen off after 5 minutes instead, going to Sleep after 15 minutes (my wife's has been left not to go to Sleep after 15 minutes).

This seems too simple a solution but I shall run with it for a while.

Do you use a screensaver? Is it possible that the Host error could have happened at the time it kicked in?

I tried one lady in Denmark who had a very peculiar middle name but that wasn't you so I gave up with the immensity of the task!

I can't think of a secure way of PMing you so we'll have to leave it to one side - but I was hoping to check to see if your settings were the same as mine in a few areas and let you know about what I'd done...

...strangely, my wife's settings for .Net Framework and mine are different - and she got an error yesterday (but only found out 12 hours after the event).

Do you know what tasks you were performing when you got yours this morning?

For those of you still following this thread (and who are still having this problem), I am currently waiting to see whether changes/repairs I made to .NET Framework using an old Windows 7 tool (and some manual changes, too) will work.

I have my doubts but, so far, I am a second day in to the process.

However, I have been looking at the normal processes that Windows 10 runs on this computer to maintain itself while I'm using it and nowhere at all do I find the use of unbcl.dll (let alone the one that sits in the place that's producing the error).

It is also unlikely to be the result of a scheduled task running as it's an intermittent fault and not a regularly occurring event.

Although we tend to see the error in Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer a long while after it occurs, it would be reasonable to try and determine what we were doing at the moment that the error occurs (when taskhostw.exe accesses unbcl.dll) as it may give us a clue as to what is the cause.

However, it would only give us the cause of why the error is occurring and may not help us determine how to effect a repair.
