Win 10 1903 May 29, 2019—KB4497935 (OS Build 18362.145) still fails the update from a USB stick.

According to the description of the fixes in KB4497935 the bug with the USB devices should have been fixed, but it still does not allow updates with installation media on a USB stick.

Fix description:

"Addresses an issue that may cause an external USB device or SD memory card to be reassigned to an incorrect drive during installation. For more information, see "This PC can't be upgraded to Windows 10" error on a computer that has a USB device or SD card attached"

I tried to do an update with installation media build 18362.145 on a system already at 18362.145 and still gets the error message below:

 

Is there a fix yet for this bug in the v 1903 release ? Which build do I need to get this bug fixed ?

I know that I can work around the issue installing from a local drive.

Also if I try upgrading from1903 to a preview 20H1 build 18908.1000 using a USB stick the update completes without this message.

I hope we don't need to wait for 20H1 to get this bug resolved.

    Yes, I did use the same MCT for the .iso that I used for the USB. That's right, I got seven Editions in the Install.esd. I might have a glance at the thread you reference, but I'll never be an insider.

    It's done, took about 4 reboots & 2 hours...

    Everything looks good & seems to be working quick & well. Thanks for the encouragement, it might have been weeks before I did it otherwise. I was looking for some sign of progress at that Known Issues site. Also, I was thinking the compatibility checks it did would only happen if it came in through Windows Update. But clearly I was wrong about that. I'm overjoyed I installed it.

    The .iso ran well off my external Seagate Slim Red 2TB HDD which plugs into a USB port. I guess that USB problem is just for some flash/thumb drives. Or can it be the .iso would work off them too? At various points in time, I did keep my .iso's on the internal HDD & even on OneDrive. But I didn't want them accidentally ending up in my Windows system image backups.

    I created the ISO with MCT and I think PCR did the same thing.

    He came up with the same size.

    It contains install.esd. with 3,268,041 KB

    That screenshot show ISO's for 1809 and 1903, but when look only one version then that  size difference depend on how this ISO is created.

    If you use MCT that will create ISO with install.esd and that contain 7 different editions,

    but if you use OS that can't run Windows exe-files or use browser in development mode (press F12 and emulate Windows mobile) and go to MS download page then that page look little bit different.

    There you can download full ISO image (same as delivered with MSDN). That ISO has install.wim which contain 11 different editions.

    I have downloaded this full ISO: Win10_1903_V1_English_x64.iso (4,823,758 KB).

    Fine, I made an .iso onto an external HDD. It's smaller than was 1809...

    I'll try to run it from there first. If it fails, I'll move it to the internal.

    I won't copy it to a USB flash drive for fear some super-hidden file would not go. I'll wait patiently for MSFT to fix its Setup.exe & make a new flash instead. Yes, I agree Pauli O proved it is 1903's Setup.exe at fault.

    Yes the ISO is smaller, I think it is build 18362.30.  Exactly the same size I have for 1903.

    Is the external HDD connected via USB or External Sata ?

    If it is USB you may end up with the same issue...

    Why are you reluctant on putting the Windows.iso on the C: drive ?

    You can always remove it later if you don't need it.
