The Bluetooth stack is trash but I've created this feedback item (https://aka.ms/AAdv6bz) in case MS ever decides to deal with this particular problem. Please upvote it or it will never be fixed.
Bluetooth Headset cannot be used as both headphones and speakers
I have a bluetooth headset that does not allow me to use it as both a microphone and a headset.
I have determined that audio will play through the Bluetooth headset as long as the recording device is set to Conexant ISST Audio. If I set the recording device to BHS-530 Hands-Free then no sound will play through either BHS-530 Playback device.
I can get audio to play while the BHS-530 Handsfree is setup as the Recording device but not while it is actively listening. As an example my BHS-530 Stereo is selected for both my default audio and default communication device. I start playing a YouTube video and audio works with the Playback menu is up in the Sound dialog (first screenshot), as soon as I select the recording menu (second screenshot) the audio stops. If I switch the recording device back to Conexant ISST Audio the youtube video will continue to send sound regardless of which menu I am on.
What do I need to set so that I can use the headset for both audio and microphone (Microsoft Teams Calls)
The headset comes up as two separate devices once it connects to windows:
Playback Device
Type: Headset
Name: BHS-530 Hands-Free
and
Type: Headphones
Name: BHS-530 Stereo
Recording Device
Type: Headset
Name: BHS-530 Hands-Free
Type: Internal Microphone
Name: Conexant ISST Audio
(this is my laptop's internal mic)

2021-02-08T19:52:47+00:00 Amazing that so many people have this problem and microsoft doesn't even acknowledge it. I've resorted to having Teams call my mobile phone and just connect my Bluetooth there.

2020-11-11T14:33:13+00:00 How has Mac OS solved this so long ago and its still a problem on windows?! i'm having this same issue and have likewise spent the hours trying to solve this. i finally gave up and just use my decade old macbook. it would be nice if this could be solved on windows... especially since microsoft makes bluetooth headsets that this presumably does work with either...

2020-05-24T11:13:16+00:00 I just bought a JBL Tune750BTNC headset this week so I could listen to music on my phone and skype/teams on laptop while working from home. Absolutely devastated when it won't work, and is a known issue. Should not have to be a tech genius to get $200 headset to work on Teams/Skype. Quite disgusted - a headset that connects to Windows 10 and plays clear sound on youtube does not work on microsoft teams and skype. Glad I found this thread, I thought there was hope, but too complicated for me. Have to hope a tech at the shop can make it work or i can get my money back.
