KB4474419 will not install

I am having the same problem albeit with a slight twist. I have two VMs,  2008 R2. One is marked EFI boot, the other is marked bios boot. That is the only difference I can find so far.  KB4474419 installed smooth as glass on the VM marked as bios boot. On the EFI marked VM I get the ever so helpful error 80004005. Still digging but I think the time has arrived for a beer or several.

I followed those steps (from link submitted before) :

1. Temporarily assign a drive letter to the System Reserved partition from the "Disk Management".

2) Open an elevated command prompt and run fsutil usn deletejournal /N /D X: where "X" is the assigned drive letter of the "system reserved" partition.

3) Remove the drive letter to the "system reserved" partition (which should remain without assigned drive letter).

4. Launch the KB4474419 update

In my case, my system reserved partition is 350 MB large and was totally full.

Clearing the logs only cleared 40 MB (310/350). It worked anyway.

I have installed this system and several others myself using Windows installer. I perfectly remember that when you create partitions using this installer, it asks if you want to create a Reserved partition or not.

So I confirm that you can install Win 7 without any reserved partition using only the official tool (I've done this at least twice).

On earlier versions of the installer, the partition was 100 MB large only.

Sometimes I use Gparted to clear the disk before install. I had issues when trying to create Windows partition in Gparted before installing. The installer didn't accept the partition if I remember correctly.

Anyway, looks like you can create this partition without re-installing Windows.

the "fix" was to free up space on windows system reserved partition and in my case it solved the problem on all boxes. I did not reformat anything. You don't have system reserved partitioned because you have decided to be very smart and partitioned the drive in your own way. 

Anyway good luck with your own way of partitioning drives and complaining later one why windows can't apply the updates :)

I definitely have learned my lesson here trying to help some one.

You explicitly said: "But I would just let Windows re-partition the drive properly this time and reinstall it.". And then you mentioned that the fix works for you. I am not inventing things here, and I am trying to find a resonable solution.

Being smart or dumb is outside the scope of this technical discussion.

Partitioning the drive in my own way is totally supported by the Windows 7 installer and there were no warnings or errors whatsoever during and after the Windows 7 installation. Again, I am not inventing things here.

Of course I would partition my drives as I prefer when I run multiple operating systems on the same computer; that is not magic, and not a corner case.
