How do I disable touchpad in Windows 10?

I have a new HP laptop. But I don't like using the touchpad so I installed my mouse. With the version of Windows 10 that came with the computer, I easily found where I could disable the touchpad in Settings. But recently it upgraded to version 1809, and reverted to the setting with the touchpad enabled. Now I can't find anything in Settings to disable it anymore. I even spoke to a Microsoft technician over the phone, who was also couldn't disable it. (In Device Manager, the setting to disable the touchpad is greyed out.) So how do I disable it?

Hello,

Try these steps and see if that helps:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If issue still persists, try this:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse key in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

    I had the same problem. I used to be able to disable the touchpad whenever an external mouse was plugged in, that was ideal, as when it ran out of batteries, my touchpad would work again as a backup. However, at some point, that option went away, and searching led me here.

    I literally just found a workaround, someone said FN+F6, but on my pc (an older Acer laptop) that toggled the screen off, pressing FN+F6 again toggled it back on. So I looked at the little blue (in my case) icons on the F* buttons, and on F7 it had a little hand pointing at a rectangle with cancel symbol, so I pressed Fn+F7 (hold Fn and press F7 so that they are pressed down at the same time and then release) and that disabled the touchpad, woohoo! Doing that again toggles the touchpad back on, again, on myAcer laptop.

    So depending on the make and model of your laptop, you may be able to toggle on/off the touchpad with a Fn+(some key) combo, look at the icons.

    FYI, on some laptops the Fn key is the one to left of spacebar and left of the Windows key, idk about Apple laptops, and controls various functions (hence Fn) like increasing/decreasing brightness of the screen or the volume of the speakers, pause/play, stop, rewind/fastforward media, and, as I just discovered, toggling on/off the touchpad. If you need help with key combos, I'd recommend asking about that specifically elsewhere, perhaps there's a youtube video you can search for.

    Yeah, I tried everything here too, but still have a jumping cursor. The only thing someone suggested that worked for me was a piece of cardboard over the touchpad. And no more jumping cursors. I don't know why Microsoft hate people who want to use mice.

    Win10 - HP - the phrase to disable the pad is in light characters, will not work.
