How do I disable touchpad in Windows 10?

I have a new HP laptop. But I don't like using the touchpad so I installed my mouse. With the version of Windows 10 that came with the computer, I easily found where I could disable the touchpad in Settings. But recently it upgraded to version 1809, and reverted to the setting with the touchpad enabled. Now I can't find anything in Settings to disable it anymore. I even spoke to a Microsoft technician over the phone, who was also couldn't disable it. (In Device Manager, the setting to disable the touchpad is greyed out.) So how do I disable it?

Hello,

Try these steps and see if that helps:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If issue still persists, try this:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse key in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

    I've tried setting the sensitivity to low but it doesn't really solve the issue. I guess I'm just too clumsy when typing! Unfortunately, my job requires a LOT of typing.

    Yeah, I wonder what the heck they were thinking when they removed the ability to disable the touchpad.  The only recourse is to set the touchpad sensitivity to low and be careful to avoid the touchpad while typing.  I wish I could confront those SW retards, I'd rip them a new one!

    I have been told that the touchpad can be PHYSICALLY disabled by taking it to a computer repair shop and having them disconnect it. But if I am suddenly mouse-less it would mean I am also laptop-less. There used to be a way to disable it within the software, but Windows 10 updates killed that idea. I assume they don't want us to have that facility for some commercial reason, but I can't imagine what that would be. There are some apps out there that are supposed to disable the touchpad, but I haven't found one that works consistently.

    I think the only way round this is to get a laptop that doesn't use MS Windows, i.e. an apple. But you'd think Microsoft could just fix this. I just cannot live with the cursor jumps when I accidentally graze the touchpad while typing.

    I have a HP laptop and cannot disable the touchpad either, I have tried every thing I can find on the problem but nothing works.

    Microsoft has screwed up again.
