2018-11 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057) - Error 0x80070643

2018-11 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057) - Error 0x80070643 - This just showed up today. (1/16/2019)  I have tried 4 times and each time it won't install. 

However, when I looked at update history, I see the following:

2018-12 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057)  - Successfully installed on 1/12/2019

So why is Windows Update trying to install an older version of the same file?  And if it should not be doing this, how do I make it stop trying?

I'm Independent Advisor and Microsoft MVP, here to help you with your question.

Usually Windows keeps installing same update, when update database is corrupted.

Please try these suggestions:

Open administrative Command Prompt and type following commands one-by-one followed by Enter key.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Close Command Prompt and see if Windows Updates works fine then.

UPDATE (19/1/19): If you're getting 'System error 5 has occurred, Access is denied' while trying above mentioned steps, you need to first uninstall KB4023057 from Settings app > Apps > Apps & features and reboot the machine. 

Then you can successfully install the update KB4023057 again, using Windows Update feature. This worked out for many users, so you can give it a try!

The fact that it is showing up for so many users might mean it is a known issue. For those who are encountering this, see the marked answers in this thread.

I would say, the marked answers aren't catching the issue. Error 0x80070643 raises due to the fact, that an older version of KB4023057 has been installed already. 

Solution: Uninstall  KB4023057 via the App list, reboot and then it should install. See also the remarks within my blog post:

Well, after I thought it was fixed, it came back again.  So I did the uninstall thing in Apps and Features, rebooted, told Windows to see if there were any updates, and it found the new 1809 update.  After that, it seems, so far, to be fixed.

    Hello! I don't know why dear Independent Advisors suggested to hide it or don't do nothing with this update notification. I found a more logical solution:

    How to fix Windows 10 KB4023057 error 0x80070643

    To address the error 0x80070643 caused by KB4023057, you need to uninstall and reinstall that particular update. We’ve outlined the steps below that would show you how to uninstall that update to get your system back to the normal condition.

    • As shown in the screenshot below, open the Settings app, navigate to Apps & Features page and find the package.
    • Tap on the listed packages and click ‘Uninstall’ to remove them from the system.
    • Reboot the PC.
    • Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates again.
    • If the update shows up again, install it and it should not throw any errors. In case the update is already listed on the screen, click on the retry button and it will install without any errors.

    Found this on another forum, it worked for me.

    FIX for: KB4023057 Fails - Error 0x80070643 (Windows 10 v1803)

    Issue: KB4023057 Windows Update fails to install repeatedly. The update continues to be offered and install continues to fail.

    Error in Windows Update: "2018-11 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057) - Error 0x80070643"

    This related event is found in the Event Viewer under Administrative Events numerous times:

    A later version of Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB4023057) is already installed. Setup will now exit.

    FIX: An older version of the update for some unknown reason ended up in the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel in Windows (instead of the "View Installed Updates" section). Uninstall KB4023057 from Programs and Features (it's NOT in Installed Updates). Reboot. The newer update KB4023057 will now install successfully from Windows Update. Note: After installation, it will still appear in Programs and Features for some odd reason.

    Disclaimer: This fix has not be approved by Microsoft. However, uninstalling a non-critical update like this is low risk. Uninstalled updates will always reinstall if necessary. Microsoft has not released a fix to this issue yet. Most likely, they will just re-issue the Windows Update properly encoded to install as needed.

    However, there is no harm in doing nothing right now and just waiting a few days - it is highly likely Microsoft will fix the Windows update.
