Windows 10 version 1809 update - Slow Context New Submenu & Menu Items Missing

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else has this problem.

After the 1809 update I've found that all the PCs I have applied it to so far have the same symptom of very slow access to the New submenu in Right Click Context menus. It seems when you first open the right click menu and scroll to the New submenu there will be a long delay before the submenu opens which freezes the Context menu. Once the New submenu opens you can roll the mouse cursor on and off the submenu and it will close and re-open quickly, but as soon as you allow the Context menu to close and try the re-open it the problem returns. It appears to be some problem with background enumeration of the menu.

I also notice on a couple of machines the New submenu now contains far fewer items after the 1809 update. Some of the systems have a lot of software installed so usually have a long list in the New submenu, others are basically vanilla content machines for browsing and just have the defaults with Office 365.

This happens over the desktop or in any open Explorer window.

The five machines I have upgraded are from a variety of manufacturers(Dell, Acer and Asus) using different processors(new and old), graphic cards(AMD, Nvidia and Intel), etc., etc., so it seems it is not associated with any specific hardware. I have had no other obvious problems with the 1809 update.

I couldn't of said it any better. Windows 10 is geared more towards those numb above their shoulders who feel the only purpose of a computer is to access the internet or play Candy Crush and post their every waking moment on social media. It is NOT geared to those who use their machines to actually work or program as you and I. Yes, I am retired from the industry (due to health reasons) but as you may know a programmer never truly retires. Windows 10 with all the unneeded "apps" which I like to call FLUFF that you can't even uninstall but can for the most part disable (which I do immediately with One Drive and that intrusive B**** Cortana) attempts to turn my $6,000+ machine into a cheap Smart Phone. I don't see (if this is the route they just had to go) why they couldn't just make a PC edition and a separate mobile edition that has all the garbage those of us who actually use a PC for its true intention never use and find ways of getting rid of or disabling so our precious resources aren't gobbled up.

MS claims that this issue is isolated to those who (blah blah blah) but maybe the reality is those who view the PC as nothing more than an internet portal have never used the context menu since they never had a reason to therefore will never know if it is bugged or not.

That is also why I NEVER use their mail feature because by doing so it takes you off of a local account and uses your hotmail/outlook account. I use Mozilla Thunderbird instead.

...as an update. Drivers and 90% of my software have been installed and configured and so far it is all running as it should.

Four decades of experience in this industry as a developer and network engineer and here is what is happening to this industry that causes issues like the ones posted in this thread.

How many times have you seen a person texting while driving, walking down the sidewalk with friends with their head buried in their phone, at a family get together or just sitting around totally focused on only the phone. Extrapolate this social media/phone addiction into how it affects attention span. A Microsoft study shows that the average tested person had an attention span less than a goldfish (8 seconds for person, 9 for goldfish). Now place someone with this addiction and attention span into the development process and what do you get? Simple...you get the drivel that is Windows 8/10. You have a coder/manager that simply can't focus on a specified development task because their thought processes are constantly being micro-interrupted by social drivel. This happens even when they don't actually have the phone in their hand as they are brainwashed by the whole process.

The new school coders/managers have little idea of how systems function in an actual working environment. Their main use of tech is a dumbed down OS for phones with tiny screens which means limited usefulness and hyper marketing...read that again...limited usefulness and hyper marketing. Does that sound familiar all you Windows 10 users? Is your OS getting less useful and more bug ridden but being marketed to you as a godsend? Is your OS ramping up data mining to the point of absurdity but giving you that worn out phrase 'for a better user experience'? Is the support for your OS a bunch of overseas children burdened with crowded working conditions, little training and a language barrier? Are you being forced to accept updates that not only hamper your workflow but actually destroys existing data? Have you been forced into accepting Skype and Cortana as being an integrated part of Windows? Did you notice how the recent Windows 10 versions have been trying to get you to login with a MS account instead of a local account?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then maybe it's time for something to be put into place to address these downward spiraling problems. Does anyone remember the DOJ stepping in years ago when MS tried to force IE on us???

    Regards,

    MTD

As a never ending quest to come to a solution I decided to backup all my files and start from scratch. After formatting my drives I installed Windows 10 Pro fresh. Before any software or drivers I installed every single update including 1809. So far so good. The NEW submenu in the context menu pops right up (as it should).

I am now going to install all my drivers and afterwards all my software. Checking the menu after every single step. I will update if it once again stops working as than I should know the culprit if perhaps a driver and\or software is causing it not to function.

My guess though if it doesn't reoccur that it is one out of 2 possibilities. Either MS fixed the 1809 revision and rereleased it instead of issuing a patch or I had my AV software running while installing and that may have prevented certain system files to update.

If I don't respond again you'll know that the problem didn't reoccur and the only real solution is to roll back before 1809 and reinstall it.

"It's obvious at least to me where the fault lies but they fail to admit it or fix it."... oh to me as well, they've screwed us because they are the ones writing the bad code.  ; (
