Windows 10 1809 update deleted all files from Documents!

Last night I updated to 1809, and it all went smoothly, but then I find that all my files in Documents are DELETED. Gone. Poof. This included many crucial documents and financial info. Yes, I have a backup (I think - using Windows Backup to a NAS). But this is pretty bad. Did no one in the first two rings run into this yet?

I understand (from the news) that this happens to all files in Documents that aren't synced to OneDrive. Further, the Documents folder is really an agglomeration of "Documents" from several different paths - not sure how that works, and it may or may not relate.

Hello Microsoft and fellow readers. Sadly, I too had all of my Files and 1/3 of my personally installed programs "Deleted" after an Microsoft update and reboot on December 13th, 2018 'this Month' on my HP Laptop.  And, No, I do not have a free~update~Upgraded installed.  I purchased this laptop with Windows 10 Professional 64bit.  Also, now, Microsoft Edge keep going off also. I feel this is a major injustice to we the Microsoft community and U.S. Citizens who are trying to do as we are told..."buy, Update, or install: Windows 10 now".   Come on guys, Microsoft has had Win 10 on the market since what? 2014, correct/?  So then, Why? ...are we Still having all of these issues?  I love the Windows 10 am am still learning all of the in's and out's yet at this point I just wish we could keep Windows 7 Pro ,yet, yes, the times are a Changin' and we all need to go with the Flo as they say, right? Yes, indeed, and~So, we are trying Microsoft!  LOL. OK friends, Lord Bless and keep up the good work All. Bye Michael.

It isn't fixed yet. My computed updated Friday 14th of December 2018 - and I have lost all my pictures and documents. One thing I have learned over the years - take something to calm you down before any updates from Microsoft....

I am lucky - I have a new back up on an external harddisk. So I will try not to explode and use bad words

But honestly Microsoft? You really need to test your updates before forcing them down on your customers. This is not the first time an update went wrong

Fully agree! Wake up Microsoft. I turned to Apple some years ago when Microsoft had problems with OS 6, 7 8. Costly problems.

But when MS got !0 and new Office 365 package I trusted the intentions of MS even if there were problems. However, if MS not take recent problems more serious, I would consider Apple or Google. So admit and solve problems MS and keep us customers informed about progress!!!

After hours of updating to 1809 I lost most of my programs, It deleted all the files from one of my 2tb external drives. And then after letting Microsoft restore my computer (they had to because restore was gone) my boot files were gone. I then had to pull hard drive and go to another computer to fix the boot files. I am now back on desktop that was ruined by the 1809 update. But I still have an empty drive to deal with. 1200 hours of music and years of photos and documents gone. They (Microsoft) should be liable for trashing peoples computers. or at least make sure to let people stop and back up before their required updates take over.

I initially thought I have caught some malware. But no, it was this MS update.

Unfortunately, data very important to me got deleted, including the backup data on OneDrive.

Until today I'm finding this thread. This is not acceptable, Microsoft has caused financial damage to me and to hundred thousands of other users. What we need here is a class act and suing MS.

They must learn, that they can't do with us whatever they want, and getting away with it.

What Microsoft is did was 100% negligence, rolling out apparently not tested updates is not acceptable. They should be held responsible for the damages they have caused.

    Honestly!!

    @JanHeisterkamp

so-called Microsoft Insiders pointed to problems in the past, only to find that Microsoft would still release faulty updates, patches.

One piece of advice I would like to give you which is simple and sweet. Backup all of your data at least on one external drive (NAS drive, USB drive) but never ever rely on one type of backup software (such as OneDrive) alone.

Microsoft, to my mind, lost control over Windows 10 respectively aim to make Windows 10 history.

The problem is that Microsoft is rolling out messed up updates knowingly that they are bugged and are causing harm to your IT. It's as simple as that. OneDrive is backing up all data and lots of users are using OneDrive as their backup solution. I have in use a secondary backup solution, however this "update" threw out my company for 2 days of business and THIS and restoring all the lost data has cost me money. Microsoft should be held financially responsible for what they are doing to their users. Period! They did not even apologize...
