windows 10 (October 2018 update) (version 1809) deleted all my files

I see that MSFT pulled the October update as of 6Oct2018 (Build 1809).  Just wanted to toss out another similar issue, but different...

While I didn't lose anything in the "My Documents", my entire desktop folder (c:\users\rcurtis\desktop) was gone.  As reported by others, the folder was there, but no contents.  Even looking in windows.old, it was empty, so like others reported, a restore to previous build would not help.

Here's where the difference set in...  I have folder redirection setup to sync profile information stored on a network drive (ref. HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders).  I also don't keep typical profile info stored under 'special folders' (profile based).  My 'documents' are actuall off the root in C:\Documents (not a special folder) and likewiese with Music, Photos, Videos -- each are separate folders off the root.  None of those documents were impacted, nor were any of my redirected folders (obviously), however the contents of my c:\users\rcurtis\desktop folder were.  I did have a backup, but still -- MSFT should have had easily trapped such a glaring flaw, and given the Windows.Old folder/function, how can something like this occur?

I've always been an early adopter to test some of the applicaitons I have to support (where we've been bit in the past  -- 2017 Fall Creator build notably -- given the .NET issues), but I have never experienced issues where personal files vanished.  Obivously, MSFT is not going to be able to magically restore the personal documents of the many, many folks affected, so it will be interesting to see how MSFT responds...

Backup, Backup, Backup.  I've been very frustrated adding OneDrive. It caused havoc with my primary offsite backup. Now have tamed it.  

Reading the articles about lost files and not trusting OneDrive as 100% independent of issue I paused or disabled.

Mr Ziko. - Have you checked for articles or blogs with same issue and a resolution such as a File Recovery backup.  Windows probably over wrote docs folder first.

Don't know Mac but would probably agree with you.

PLEASE - everyone. Backup your files now, before you get the surprise update with issues Mr Ziko experienced.

Might want to look about a bit. With the 1803 Update I noticed a new Document Folder show up all nice and shiny and empty but I found my old one on my hard drive too. Under C/Users/Shado

(my private user folder as opposed to the public one).

So I merged them 😜

I have just updated my windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me.

Files were located at C:/Users/rober/Documents/

This location is still present, with no files. All of files deleted.

I am extremely upset. Not sure what to do….please let me know.

I'll let you know what you should do. Backup your stuff! If you've been using Microsoft for 23 years and you've only amassed 220 gb then you really have no excuse for not having that fully backed up somewhere. You can get onedrive or even just pay 3 bucks a month to Google and they could back that up for you. You could have even just put all that on a flash drive and put it in a safe. I think this is good for you Robert, you've clearly been needing to learn this  lesson for a long time

Yup, my user documents folder is also empty

Thankfully, I had my Ms Onedrive setup to backup the files, so I managed to restore it all.

This is no good at all.
