Windows 10 version 1803 April 2018 update broke bluetooth volume control.

My pc automatically updated to the April 2018 update, version 1803.

After restarting my PC I notice my volume control via Bluetooth will not adjust the volume anymore. Speakers are Creative T30

However if I am in WMP or iTunes the slider changes the volume.

If I use my Microsoft keyboard volume keys or the speaker Icon on the taskbar the slider moves but no volume is changed. However if I slide all the way left the volume turns off.

Anyone else having issues.

Any ideas or is a Microsoft patch already required?

I have tried uninstalling driver and rebooting but no change.

Cheers

Microsoft is aware of reports that the Absolute Volume feature is incompatible with some Bluetooth devices, resulting in the inability to adjust the Bluetooth device’s volume.  If you are experiencing this issue, neither the volume slider in the taskbar, nor the device’s volume controls have any effect on volume.

To resolve this issue, first make sure you’ve installed the latest Windows Updates.  A solution was included in the October 24, 2018—KB4462933 (OS Build 17134.376) update for Windows 10 version 1803.  To check for updates, select the Start button, and then go to Settings> Update & security> Windows Update, and select Check for updates.

Three devices that are known to experience the issue will automatically have the Absolute Volume feature disabled and should no longer experience the issue once you’ve installed KB4462933:  Creative T30 Wireless Speakers, Edifier R2000 DB, and the JBL Go.

For other Bluetooth devices, once you’ve installed KB4462933 or once you've installed Windows 10 version 1809, you can resolve the issue by disabling Absolute Volume manually by making a change in the registry.  (Warning:  Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. For added protection, back up the registry before attempting to modify it.)

To disable the Absolute Volume feature manually:

1.     In the Search box, type cmd.  Right-click Command Prompt in the Search results and select Run as administrator.

2.     In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:

reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

To re-enable the Absolute Volume feature:

1.     In the Search box, type cmd.  Right-click Command Prompt in the Search results and select Run as administrator.

2.     In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:

reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT /v DisableAbsoluteVolume /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

You may need to restart Windows for the registry change to take effect.

Windows bluetooth dev here

If anyone can't control their BT speaker/headphones volume from the PC after the update, can you share a product link to what device you're using?

We added "absolute volume" in the last update which lets the Windows volume slider directly control the local volume of BT speakers/headphones who support it.

Sorry to hear this is happening, I already made a note to look into the Creative T30/T50, Edifier 1700BT, JBL Bar 5.1, we want this to work as best as possible so let me know the devices you're having issues with and we'll look into it.

Thanks guys!

I checked the Marvell AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter for updated drivers and I'm currently using the most recent ones: Windows Catalog

This is the most current version updated in August 2017: 15.68.9120.47

I'll have to see what my tablet was using. I know that worked. I just expected my Surface Pro to work the same way the tablet did.

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the update Stevero1. The Anker drivers will appear automatically so I wouldn't worry about those, its your computers built in Bluetooth Hardware that we need to double check is running the very latest drivers. When you go to Marvell AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter under Device Manager and select the drivers tab, what info is displayed? If you click the update driver button and search automatically, does it find a newer driver or say the best driver is already installed?

Sorry this took so long to get back to. Life got in the way.

I'm sure I'm going to post more info here than you absolutely wanted about what my Device Manager sees with the Bluetooth device not connected and connected. You'll see that I seem to have quite a few things.

    Here they are:

    Without the Anker Connected

    Bluetooth

    Marvell AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter

    Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator

    Microsoft Bluetooth LE Enumerator

    Network Adapters

    Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)

    Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)

    *Nothing listed under System devices

    Anker Connected

    Audio inputs and outputs

    Headphones (SoundCore mini Stereo)

    Headset (SoundCore mini Hands-Free)

    Headset (SoundCore mini Hands-Free)

Microphone Array (Realtek High Definition Audio (SST))

    Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio(SST))

    Bluetooth

    Marvell AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter

    Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator

    Microsoft Bluetooth LE Enumerator

    SoundCore mini

    SoundCore mini Avrcp Transport Adapter

    Network Adapters

    Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)

    Bluetooth Device (RFCOMM Protocol TDI)

    Sound, video and game controllers

    Intel(R) AVStream Camera 2500

    Intel(R) Display Audio

    Realtek High Definition Audio(SST)

    SoundCore mini Hands-Free

    SoundCore mini Stereo

    System devices

SoundCore mini Hands-Free Audio and Call Control HID Enumerator

When I tried the method that seems to have worked for some, I concentrated on updating the drivers under Sound, video and game controllers.

Like I said, that blew up Windows 10 on my Surface Pro (about a month old). I'd love to have this fixed, but I haven't had time to get back to this.

I use Anker BT Audio hardware with my computer - Soundbuds Tag Earphones Headset. The only related listing I have under 'Sound, video and game controllers' is listed as 'Soundbuds Tag Stereo' and it's only listed there once. If you have multiple listings for the same thing there, you could try removing it from your Devices under Bluetooth and other devices, Audio. Tap click on it and select remove device. After rebooting the computer with your Anker speakers switched off, if there is still an entry for them in Device Manager, you should be able to remove that. When you then go to install the speakers again, only the needed entries should appear in due course.

I'm curious as to what's listed for your computers built in Bluetooth hardware (its tucked away in Device Manager under 'System Devices' under the name of Realtek Bluetooth UART Bus Driver in the case of my computer). It's important that the Bluetooth hardware built into the computer (or BT USB adapter plugged in to give this capability) has the latest and greatest drivers designed for this OS update -if not, the hardware maker should come up with some. The driver date for my computers built in BT hardware is 12/04/2018. Unfortunately, even though these drivers are in Microsoft's driver catalog, they weren't even updated to this revision using Windows Update when I tried - I had to manually go out and search for the updated drivers.
