Unable to turn off “Restricted Mode is enabled by your network administrator” in YouTube, but IAM the administrator. Help!

Hi all,

Here’s the nub of the problem: 

YouTube says: “Restricted Mode is enabled by your network administrator.” but I AM the administrator of my own home pc. I'm totally mystified as to how this got activated in the first place and I can't find a way of undoing it. How do I switch this off?!?

I’m using Windows 7 and Google Chrome on a home computer. Any chance anyone could help me (and the no doubt countless others out there plagued with the same problem) out?

I’ve already trawled YouTube and Chrome forums on this and have drawn a dud at every turn. No help there. The problem is not a Family Safety issue, as I don’t have a family account. So you are quite possibly my last hope of resolving this.

I’ve even tried the regedit route (i.e. switching the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome\ForceSafeSearch register key value to 0), but that, too, was a dead end because no such Google key or policy exists in the Policies folder on my pc.

I’m not a PC expert, so you may need to spell things out in fairly plain English for me.

    I can't help solve the problem (even though I bet it's solved by now) however, I can give you a tip if there are still troubles with anything else on that network. The problem isn't with your computer, it's your network. Your network is set for restricted mode, and unless you switch wifi networks that won't change. (unless you change it) 

    (Also im kinda having the reverse problem: trying to figure out how to turn restricted mode ON for a network, if you managed to turn it off that would be nice to know how XD)

    (EDIT: seems like there are still other ppl that want it off; coming here and finding no answer. Try resetting your router to factory default, cuz like  I said: it's not your computer, it's your internet connection.)

    I am having the same issue on my HP Chromebook. I've turned off restricted mode under my account, yet at the bottom of youtube it still shows: Restricted mode is enabled by your network administrator. I am at a loss myself and not happy about it.

    When I click on Restricted Mode on, it doesn't bring any option up for me. It just says: Restricted Mode is enabled by your Network Administrator, but I am the Network Admin of my Chromebook. I'm at a loss.

    Restricted Mode is enabled by your network administrator.

    I have no definitive answers but think about other possibilities everytime I see a new post. Here are some thoughts... Is this specific to the user who is logged in?  What happens if they use a different device? Different user?  I often wonder if it is a locked file on a particular device or if on all devices.  What about "incognito mode or guest  mode?  I know back when I was trouble shooting I uninstalled Chrome, deleted all reference in every folder and temp I could find..tried different browsers, different videos, but I don't recall if I completely reset the network settings.  I think I would remove/forget all wifi.

    Clear with netsh int ip reset at admin cmd prompt, ipconfig /flush dns too.  reset IE, reset Edge, reset Chrome, sign user out first.  Start fresh.

    I reset the device that was doing it to me back then...have nothing to test my theories...if any of this works ..please let me know.

    when was last time you ran Malwarebytes?  If you mean Avast Antivirus, check to see if you also have WebDiscover Browser installed.  Malware, Adaware pain.  I rarely see one without the other.  I remove them.   Suppose to be legitimate software but depending on where you got them, maybe not.  if your youtube issue wasn't there until after you got Avast...could be issue.  Good luck
