I just received a phone call on my cell phone, the caller ID was my own phone number. Was curious so I answered it, probably shouldn't have. I don't have a smart phone by the way. The robo voice said it was microsoft, that my windows license key was going to be deactivated because my IP address had been compromised from several different countries and they needed to set up a new IP address for me. I was then transferred to a person. Couldn't understand them so hung up. Is any of my information compromised, also concerned that the caller ID on my cell phone was my cell phone number?

I just received the same phone call several times this morning. I didn't respond to the prompt to press to be connected with an agent. I almost believed it because I sometimes us a VPN and thought it was causing this problem. Thank your for sharing this information.
The same thing happened to me this morning 1/20/2019. My name and home landline phone. I picked up listened and was going to hang up; they disconnected first. You, Microsoft, need to put out a statement and investigate. No isolated incident and I am sure has been successful or they would have stopped by now. React! We are your customers.

You aren't addressing anyone in an official capacity at Microsoft here. This is a peer-to-peer help community. In any event, what does "...put out a statement..." mean? A statement where? What does "investigate" mean? These are off-shore operations, and if one is shut down, two more will pop up. There's little or nothing that Microsoft can do about it. They thrive because there are plenty of credulous people to prey on.
Yes, you are right about their inability to undo this. And the reason it works is fear, age (I am 77) and those that are too trusting. If they put their logo on these forums, and just said you folks are doing the right thing by ignoring this scam it would help. My thought was not for myself, but others who would not know better. I worked in the industry, actually know what my IP address is and know I should not give out the key number. Others, similar age only use for games and fun, so more likely too cooperate.

Got the same phone call today to my wireless phone and it was showing coming from my wireless number!
