Media Player web address for album info changed in recent Windows 10 upgrade

After a recent major upgrade for Windows 10, my Windows Media Player is trying to find Album information from a new website that does not work.  The old web address was (fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com) and new web address it is using is (musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com) which is not a valid address.  How do I change the web address used for album metadata back to correct address?  Searched old message boards with no luck.

Found a solution that worked for me:

  1. Start regedit.exe
  2. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\TunerConfig"
  3. Look for setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER -- it should have a value "pmpMusicMatch"
  4. Edit the setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER, and clear the value so you have a blank value
  5. Save / exit regedit.exe
  6. Restart Windows Media Player, you should be restored back to fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com

What an unnecessary pain in the proverbial.

Update: this DOES NOT WORK any more.

Microsoft appear to have strangled this option off entirely. We are now stuck with the much lesser offering that is "musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com".

Microsoft: thanks for nothing.

    working...I think they have killed off wmp

    You must revert update from 1809 to 1803. Do not ever rip with WMP. Always with EAC on secure, 320 kbps with -m s command line option and pregaps set to next track.

    MP3 tag won't add covers like FAI did, especially non-square ones, this is why WMP had beaten all other media players and metadata editors.

    same problem here. I applied the fix ages ago and it was fine, but doesn't work now. The registry is blank and nothing to remove.

    I have given up. When I rip a CD, I now make sure all the information is corrected manually. I use MP3 TAG which is a fantastic free program and allows you to edit all the metadata and add artwork, etc. Information stays embedded, so if you put your files in itunes for example, it keeps your information, not overrides it with itunes information.

    I still used Media Player to play and listen to music, but it is still a pain in the **** that Microsoft does this to us. If WMP is to be discontinued, what happens, will it just no longer work? I don't like VLC.

    Does everyone here have an Xbox I am assuming? Does this happen for people who dont have Xbox/Live? Because I have both...
