After update of my windows 10 I got problem Desktop is unavailable

I posted the solution that worked for me below, but it's buried now with people that reinstalled windows and called it a solution.

Basically this is a failed patch install. The solution I found was to reinstall the newest Windows patch over the top, and it fixed everything and I was back to before the issue happened.

1. Download latest Windows full patch, right now I believe 1803 or 1809, which will be a .ISO file.

2.Extract all files from the patch onto a thumb drive. All this must be done on another computer.

3.On defective computer, hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to bring up task manager. You may have to click "more options" to see menu.

4.Under File menu, top left, click "run new task", and "browse". This is the only way I was able to access my file system.

5.Find your thumb drive with extracted Windows patch, and run the Setup file. This will kick off the patch like normal.

After reboot you will be good to go. This has worked for 2 computers now for me, so I think it's the fix.

If this works for you, please give feedback so it doesn't get buried again. Waste to see so many struggle still.

A couple of things to note, at least in my particular case:

1. When trying to open Task Manager, it took forever. In fact, I didn't think it was going to do so at first and thought I was hosed. But I let it sit there for a few minutes and then Task Manager finally showed up.
2. When running a new task, I had to mark the "run as administrator" checkbox. Otherwise it just flashed the "run" window and nothing happened.

Thanks so much! Hours and hours later, and this worked for me as well. Thank-you! And shame on MS! Also thanks to posters about formatting the flash drive first. I never would have known that it had to be changed. I sure appreciate everyone working together. I never write on these things, but it is so helpful to know how people fare after trying. I hope my experience will encourage others to try. My computer was on asus zenbook pro and I had to use the f2 key to get into bios setting to be able to boot from flash drive. Thanks to other posters who provided that info so I knew to google booting from asus flashdrive and find the settings I needed to change first. Good luck to all!

Many thanks to ConiGL - I think this is the best advice on this blog (even though I haven't fixed my PC yet). (Where are you, Microsoft? Why aren't you monitoring this site and fixing these ridiculous problems???), but I've got quite a long way towards a solution, I think/hope.

I followed your recommendation to download from the Windows 10updates. For anyone else with the same problem, you may want to read this.

Phase 1: downloading the patch onto a USB drive

Download (from the following URL) the Windows 10 patch, onto a USB drive

(Microsoft says minimum 8GB, but I suffered a failure with that – it seems to need 16GB **)...

…. “Downloading Windows 10” appears...

this took almost 3 hrs on my system (not a fibre optic internet link)

It then went into a process of "creating an install-able media" or some such term.

Eventually the message Verifying Download appeared – that was brief, about 2 mins.

Next, Creating Windows 10 Media appeared – that took 15mins.

Then, Your USB flash drive is ready appeared,

and a “Finish” button was displayed.

So I now, seemingly, have a USB drive with a Win 10 installable patch on it.

Phase 2: attempting to apply the patch to the damaged Lenovo PC.

I started up the damaged PC using F12 to boot from the USB disk, which it did successfully.

I got this message:

It looks as though you started an upgrade and booted from installation media.

If you want to continue with the upgrade, remove the media from your PC and click Yes.

If you want to perform a clean installation instead, click No.

It wasn't clear to me whether the upgrade referred to was the original automatic Windows Update or the installation from the USB drive, so I tried removing the USB drive and clicked Yes. The system went through screens very similar to the original automatic Windows Update and had he same result, ie with a black screen and only the Recycle Bin icon visible (and no link to the internet).

So I tried again booting from the USB disk and this time tried “No”.

This gave a screen with the options “Install New” or “Repair your computer”

I initially tried “repair”.

That gives two options”

   Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings, and applications

       The files settings and applications are moved to Windows with this option. This

       option is only available when a supported version of Windows is already running

       on the computer.

   Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)

       The files settings and applications aren't moved to Windows with this option.

       If you want to make changes to partitions and drives, start the computer using the

       instillation disc. We recommend backing up your files before you continue.

       Selecting the Upgrade option gives the following:

            The upgrade option isn't available if you start your computer using

             Windows installation media.

           If a copy of Windows is already installed this computer and you want to upgrade, remove             this installation media and restart your computer,

           After Windows has started normally, insert the installation media and

           run Windows setup.

So, to date, I have a USB stick, with, apparently, an installable copy of. or patch to, Windows 10, but I can't find a way to apply it.

i mentioned this in my earlier post - but here it is again

I experienced this after the latest update (October 2018) on my X1 Laptop.

After a few SIHost.exe errors and other errors, you  end up with a black screen, with no access to the start button.

You can Ctrl-Alt-Del and go to task manager - from there use the file -> run menu to run cmd in admin mode to try other things.

However,  if  you go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 to create a update disk on USB, you can then run the startup from the USB using the method above (i.e via file->run).

After a few hours of messing about with other commands, this finally worked for me, and is a much safer way of doing it, as you are getting bang up to date files, rather then from other sources.

I would try this option first, as even creating other usernames and logging into those took forever and still had the same issues.
