AN obvious bug that lasts for years. genius engineers help backup cloud files and end up with no permission to restore. God, ms is really doing products and really taking serious of consumer experience.
"System Restore failed to extract the file (...\OneDrive) from the restore point."
Since updating to Windows 1803, system protection does not work. Restore will not restore from the restore point created during the update. Nor will it restore from any new restore point I create. I get the message:
System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
Details:
System Restore failed to extract the file (<the path on my system>\OneDrive) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during the System Resotre. (0x8007018b)"
This is the same result if I attempt to restore to the point that the Windows 1803 upgrade occurred. And if I attempt to restore to a point I created immediately after the upgrade. And if I attempt to restore to a point created immediately before I attempt to restore to it. In other words. It is not possible for me to create a restore point and restore to it.
On the rare occasions when I attempted a restore in the past, it worked okay.
I tried this on another machine also recently updated to Windows 1803. The restore point creation then restoration worked correctly. The only obvious difference between the two is that the machine on which the restore worked had only a C:\ drive. The machine on which the restore fails uses a restore point that covers two drives and the OneDrive file that cannot be recovered is on the non-C: drive.

2020-06-10T20:36:44+00:00 I found this post while trying to find a solution to my problem. I have a similar problem with system restore failing to extract, but instead of it being from onedrive it was from iclouddrive. Is there a way to exclude the cloud instead of turning it completely off?

2020-04-24T13:39:09+00:00 ...I only want to find a solution for restoring to January 2019, just before that last MS update...
If Dr. Jonas Moses still has a restore point from January 2019, he should boost the amount of drive space that system restore is permitted to use to avoid having it vanish ... the PowerPoint problem may return and the restore point may be needed again. Old restore points are deleted to stay within the permitted drive space allocation.
AFTER increasing the drive space allocation, the good Dr. really should follow the step-by-step instructions that use "system configuration" to reboot into "safe" mode and find the command prompt right click to run as administrator and type rstrui to start system restore. Safe mode doesn't start the crowd of processes that start in normal mode, so system restore is less likely to trip over something and fall flat on its face.
In re: the PowerPoint problem that precipitated this saga ... searching "powerpoint crashes inserting image" turns up solutions for many different issues rather than one solution repackaged as click-bait for many different sites. Of the Microsoft articles describing one from November 2018, one seemed more timely, it suggests that an Intel graphics driver has to be updated, i.e. a Powerpoint update uses the graphics driver differently and ran into a bug and chose not to work around it. There's no shortage of possible underlying causes, like software conflicts and running out of memory. A number involve a security update interfering with inserting some type of images or media someone that someone figured out how to hack. The gremlins have more than a year's head start now, so you may have to jump through several hoops to disable the "protection" added by updates before image insertion works.
If the system and software aren't recent and your time is valuable, e.g. minimum wage, then taking advantage of a new PC's warranty to make someone else solve the problem is more cost effective than chasing bugs yourself. If Powerpoint doesn't insert images correctly and they can't fix it within 2 days, return it and buy a different one. Don't wait on hold for support or some mythical senior pubah. A computer is a tool invented over 70 years ago. Treat it like one. It either works or its out.

2020-04-22T13:59:02+00:00 Did this work on a restore point that Windows could not restore from in regular, non-safe, mode? I still don't have reliable information on whether the problem is created when the restore point is created. Or alternatively, if it's only that the Windows cannot use a restore point that has no problem.

2020-04-20T06:48:54+00:00 I can't believe that we're still sitting with the same problem with no fix from Microsoft.
