PC won't boot to Windows 10 from SSD

I bought my PC years ago with only a HDD. I added a SSD myself afterwards. When I booted my PC after a hard shutdown/electricity fallout I had only my HDD in BIOS. I then boot from HDD, get an error and let the PC reboot. After a few times the SSD would be recognized in BIOS and I could change the SSD to default.

I got tired of this proccess a few days ago and found a tip to disable the hdd-partition with diskpart. The first time I had a hardreset again (mouse and keyboard froze and pc didn't shutdown with a single press on startbutton), I couldn't do the HDD boot-trick and tried changing the cables from hdd to ssd (ssd in sata1). This didn't help. In diskpart I made the SSD partition active. I now can see the SSD in BIOS, but booting gives an error "An operating system wasn't found.". When I retry diskpart, the partition could be made active again. It seems like this resets..

Bootrec.exe /FixMbr was successful

Bootrec.exe /FixBoot gives no access error (there could be some parts left of a dual boot setup)

chkdsk gives no problems found

Mediatool boot:

  • This PC can't be recovered with start-uprepair.
  • You need to choose which installation of Windows you would like to put back when using Systemrecovery.
  • Reboot, select a operating system and select Systemrecovery. No systemcopy available.

How could I make my pc boot again?

    Hi,

    I never got around to typing out a list of stuff I change, but thought I should mention that you might want to take a look through all of the "Privacy" settings, along with "Windows Defender\Security", and Delivery Optimization..

    Delivery Optimization can allow your Windows Updates to come from other people's computer... kind of like a torrent... Or other computers on your own network...

    Windows Defender\Security can send info to Microsoft that you may not want... As can "Diagnostic Feedback" in "Privacy"...

    Hi,

    The best thing for the drivers would be to use Windows Update, or search the available driver updates for your specific machine...

    There may be some available for Windows 10... If not, Windows 8 should work.. There is not much difference..

    If you have issues with graphics, the graphics adapter manufacturer would be a good place to look...

    A lot of times Windows has a older driver through Windows Updates, but it is one they have certified to work... Hopefully anyway...

    If you have any 3rd party Chips, like extra USB or SATA, look for that chip's drivers...

    Intel has something called a "Chipset" (INF) driver that in itself is not a driver, but more like a tool to check to make sure the Intel Chipsets are updated properly.. AMD has something similar..

    I change a lot of settings... almost to many to list... I was actually going to open up WordPad and make one, but haven't done so yet... Maybe I can do that this evening...

    One thing you might check for is "MPEG Video Extension" from the STORE... It enables Windows Media Player and\or Movies+TV to play .mpeg video as well as .mp4, and a few others...

    I normally go to "Privacy"... Background Apps... and turn most of them off...

    Same with the "Live Tiles" on the Start...

    Sorry we were unable to save your previous installation... Reinstalling is a lot of work... especially the programs and Apps...

    Considering the circumstances though, you may be better off in the long run with everything fresh...

    BTW... There may be nothing wrong with your driver updater program, but I personally just don't trust them...

    Windows 10 is pretty good at doing most of that automatically, but sometimes any 3rd party stuff may need some help... I have to do very little on my machine, and it is a Windows 7 SP1 era machine... 2012 I think..

    I think you are right with Fast Startup.

    Seems all to be working now.

    How to update the drivers in the best way?

    Any other settings to look at?

    Hi,

    Fast Startup is active again after reinstalling windows...

    The HDD probably should be Formatted as a Primary Drive...

    You may have damage to the SSD from the power failure, but it mat just be Fast Startup...

    You still may need to update some drivers... I wouldn't use that driver updater program you used before...

    It seems that sometimes the SSD isn't present at the first boot and a reboot using Ctrl+Alt+Del when Boot device not found is needed. The HDD is visible in Windows now.
