Surface won't let me log in "Your PIN is no longer available due to a change in security settings."

Greetings,

I have a Surface Pro running Windows 10.  When I opened it this morning Hello did not recognize me and said "Your PIN is required to sign in."  When I tried to put my PIN in it says "Your PIN is no longer available due to a change in security settings..."  I have not created a USB boot drive.  How do I get logged in?

**Moved to Windows Hello as this is not a problem with the Surface**

I had this same issue on a family member's computer. I chatted with Microsoft and the only way we could get it fixed was a system reset. I'd say try a restore if you have a restore point first. This was a fairly new computer (Surface Laptop purchased a month ago). After the reset, facial recognition started working again as did the option for a PIN.

Reset this PC.

  1. From the sign-in screen, press and hold the shift key on the keyboard, select the power icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, and then select Restart. Keep holding the shift key until the device restarts and the Choose an option screen appears on a blue background.
  2. Once Windows Recovery loads, release the shift button, and then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Reset this PC> Keep my files.
  3. You should now be able to sign-in again.

    Hello,

I have a Surface laptop I purchased about a month ago at Best Buy for near $1000. Initially I set up face regognition, pin ,and password and all were working smoothly.  For some reason there was an update and now when I try to sign into my computer it tells me my PIN is required to sign in. No big deal, have used it multiple times. However, this time it's stating "your PIN is no longer available due to a security change to the settings on this device. You can set up your PIN again by going to Settings>Accounts>Sign in options". Clearly I can't get into settings because I can't get past this screen. When I took this to Best Buy they told me "it's a know security update issue" and since I just reached my 30 day mark, I would have to purchase a $200 service plan so they can perform a factory reset. I'm told this will delete all if my files I have on my computer which is not what I want, nor do I want to dish out $200 for a computer I paid $1000 for a month ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my computer for my business and the help I recieved from Best Buy was subpar.

    I have this same issue.

    its says

‘Your PIN is no longer available due to a change to the security settings on this device. You can set up your PIN again by going to settings > Accounts > Sign-in options’

but i can not do anything on the laptop at all, not even reset

The only way to correct this seemingly all too frequent problem is a full factory reset. It seems stupid to lose all your files just to fix a PIN issue. I've talked with Microsoft Tech support and indeed factory reset is the only option they have.

Microsoft, if you're reading this....please oh please patch this common problem. I'm not about to erase my college work just to be able to use my PIN.

You don't need Best Buy to perform a reset.

    Go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surfacerecoveryimage   (with a

different Windows computer if yours is not working properly)  and download a

recovery image for your Surface. You will need a 16GB USB stick formatted FAT32.

Unzip/extract the recovery zip to the formatted USB stick and then-

To reset your Surface from a USB recovery drive:

Step 1:    Make sure your Surface is turned off and plugged in (hold down the power

    button for 30 seconds).

Step 2:     Insert the USB recovery drive into the USB port on your Surface.

Step 3:    Press and hold the volume-down button while you press and release the

    power button on your Surface.

Step 4:     When the Surface logo appears, release the volume button.

Step 5:    When prompted, select the language and keyboard layout you want.

Step 6:     Select Troubleshoot > Reset your PC.

If prompted for a recovery key, select Skip this drive at the bottom of

    the screen.

Step 7:     Select the target operating system you wish to reset. This

refers to the current operating system installed on your Surface.

Step 8:    Select Yes, repartition the drives, and on the next page, select Next.

Step 9:     Choose Just remove my files.

    Step 10:    Select Reset.

Surface restarts and the Surface logo displays while the reset process

continues (this can take a while).
