Today Microsoft released six updates, but I was only able to get five to successfully install. The sixth update -- KB4340558 -- continually fails with error code 80092004. The full name of the update is: Security and Quality Rollup updates for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, and 4.7.1 for Windows 8.1, RT 8.1, and Server 2012 R2 (KB 4340558) In an attempt to correct this error, I have: Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter Run"dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" Stopped and restarted services pertaining to Wnidows Update -- wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc But none of these steps resolved the problem. This particular update downloads, but simply fails to install. I did a clean reinstall a couple of months ago, so I do not think my system is at fault here. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem with this update?

Thank you. Workaround 2 worked for me. I didn't even have to reinstall Windows on a production server or perform a "Clean boot" which has never solved a problem for anyone EVER. I wish MS reps didn't post here and clutter these forums with non answers. My issues ALWAYS get solved by a community member and NEVER anyone affiliated with MS. Workaround 2 Uninstall the June 2018 Preview of Quality Rollup updates KB 4291497 or KB 4291495, run the DISM cleanup tool, and then reinstall the July 2018 Security and Quality Rollup updates KB 4340557 or KB 4340558, as appropriate. To do this, follow these steps: Navigate to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Installed Updates . Locate the line item for either KB4229726 or KB4229727 , as appropriate. Right-click the row item, and then click Uninstall . Restart the computer as requested. At an administrative command prompt, run the following command: DISM.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup Rescan on Windows Update for updates, and then install the July 2018 .NET Framework Security and Quality Rollup update KB 4340557 or KB 4340558, as applicable.

On Windows 8.1 64 bit, experiencing the problem described, "Windows 8.1 Update KB4340558 Fails with Error Code 80092004". I had a hunch that it was somehow related to last months optional "Preview of Quality Rollups..." for .NET Framework. Note, that once installed, you cannot readily and easily uninstall some of these rollups. So, I had to use System Restore to roll back the machine to a date before I installed the Preview of Quality Rollups, which was June 20, for me. Upon reboot, ran Windows Update, and was able to install all of the security updates, including KB4340558. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your posting to me. Ive tried a couple of times to put install it manually but all failed. Ive had hundreds of similar posts sent to me they are flooding my inbox. Called a buddy...he had similar experiences with windows 10 few months ago. Took him 18 hours to sort it out. But with this causing so many people to be affected he reckons that at sime point Microsoft will issue a new program that will supercede this and knock it off the system all together and will not show when you check for updates. Lets hope so.

Hi, ive seen this fix posted on another site, ive not tried it yet though It’s caused by the .NET 4.x rollup component KB 4338419 , which somehow conflicts with the last two rollups KB 4229727 (the Preview from June) and KB 4096417 (the May rollup). The solution: Uninstall KB 4229727 & KB 4096417, then clean up the leftovers by running Dism /Online /NoRestart /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup (you may also run Disk Cleanup > Windows Update Cleanup) Reboot and KB 4338419 will install successfully. ****kb4334919 is an update bundled with two other KB's in the update.
