After installation of KB4056892 boot failure, after roll-back error 0x800f0845

Hi,

I have older AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Asus MB, after installation of KB4056892 the system doesn't boot, it only shows the Windows logo without animation and nothing more. After several failed boots it do roll-back then it shows error 0x800f0845. Unfortunately, it seems it's not easy to disable the automatic updates without gpedit tweaks, so it tries installing and rolling-back the update over and over. The sfc /scannow shows no problem, in-place upgrade also doesn't seem to help. I can try full reinstall, but I doubt it will change anything. It seems like the update is binary incompatible with my old CPU. I understand that making the machine unbootable is the best protection from remote exploitation, but I would rather have the OS working. Especially if my CPU is not vulnerable to the Meltdown attack and the MS mitigation attempts for Spectre is more than questionable. I could find only some German and Italian people reporting the same issue (well the CPU is quite pre-historic and the KB update is very fresh), but no info / acknowledgment from the MS so far. I have Czech localization. Could anybody provide more information?

    yes, but anyway is still recommended to install KB4073290 & KB4073291 (even if you are using an INTEL CPU or a non-affected AMD CPU) because these updates contains more fixes too due are cumulative.

    My system: (Targa) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ (Brisbane 2,51 Ghz)

    The known issues for KB4056892 now indicate KB4073290 for that case.

    the update KB4073290 is not coming via the Windows Update app, so the old update is still breaking my machine, so how on earth do I STOP IT?

    Make it clear, do I have to remove this KB4056892 ? How? Why is still installing? 

    I am downloading the KB4073290 , so I can install it, will my machine still boot with KB4056892  already installed?

    Total rubbish, I have never seen such a failure!!! I work in an IT department. I would have sacked your whole development department if I was your manager!!! 

    UPDATE:

    so I installed KB4073290  and KB4056892  is still updating and failing with error message:

    0x800f0845

    The only good news is that my laptop boots. There is absolutely no information what to do with error 0x800f0845 and what the update is about and why it's failing.

    UPDATE 2:

    I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it ends with the message:

    Potential Windows Update Database error detected - Not a hint what to do.

    I ran the instructions from this site:

    As far as I am aware, KB4073290 supersedes KB4056892.

    On my machine I uninstalled KB4056892 (using Control Panel) after the failure to boot when it tried to auto install. When KB4073290 was released I downloaded it from the Microsoft Catalog, double clicked it and it installed itself. KB4056892 was not present, so it could not have been patched.

    KB4056892, (when it works!) results in Windows 10 build 1709 version 16299.192.

    KB4073290 results in Windows 10 build 1709 version 16299.194 (on 64-bit machines)

    KB4073290 appears to me to be a Cumulative Update, that is one which can be installed on any version of (64-bit) Windows 10 build 1709, and will bring it fully up to date.

    Update on my progress for AMD Athlon 64 x 2........SUCCESS! 

    After downloading KB4073290 from the Microsoft Update Catalog website and running the downloaded file to install it using the Windows Standalone Installer, my AMD system updated and re-booted to build 16299.194. I ran wushowhide.diagcab and saw that KB4056892 had been removed from hidden updates. 

    The update KB4073290 worked fine and my AMD Athlon 64 x 2 system is back to normal.

    Hope this info might help someone else.
