Error Code: 0x80072f76 0x20017. Windows media creation tool.

I was getting the same error on three different machines (including a Surface Pro). Obviously the tool is faulty at present. The best option is to download the ISO directly (i.e. avoid the Media Creation Tool completly). But to do this you must trick Microsoft into thinking your PC can't run the MCT (otherwise you just get redirected back to the MCT page). A few posts up from here is an excellent response from Lokestar which explains what needs to be done. I also found this link which is slightly more verbose...

When i go to the link it automatically redirects me to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10.

No option for installing the iso file only. This is extremely frustrating, I wiped my laptop and need to reinstall windows and post it to a customer by monday. At this rate I won't be able to do that!!!

Change the browser user agent string to iPad (Safari) and you'll get the direct download ISO links. More info @

Hey, I'm using windows 7 and was having this same problem. I don't know if this works with your Windows version, but I figured out how to get it to work on 7.

Try this:

1. Move the exe on desktop ( I don't know if this has any effect, but that's what I did)
2. Right click the file and choose properties
3. Choose compatibility and check the "run in compatibility mode" (my windows is in Finnish so I don't know what that is in english) and choose your windows version from the dropdown menu
4. Click Apply and OK
5. Right click the file again and choose "Run as administrator", click ok on the popup

It should work now.

ok guys. i think I know the problem.

You need to update your pc to the latest creators update.

It seems to work now, although I have not finished creating the bootable drive yet
