Fall Creator update fails to install at 81%

All my windows updates crashes while installing. I have windows 10 version 1607 and was trying to update to the fall creators update. Like previous upgrades, this version crashes the computer while updating and reverts back to the previous version.

Unlike previous crashes, this one made it all the way to 81%.

I have tried all prior options to try to correct this issue with no resolution :(

I was having a similar problem, and after multiple attempts (over 7 times) trying different solutions like disabling virus protection, disabling startup programs, running update database corruption repair, etc. My computer never got past 81% before freezing and not updating.

I stumbled across a forum talking about problems with Anatel PCI-E Wlan cards (wi-fi) and old drivers that would hang up their computers and after removing the card (not just disabling) their machines would update and run fine. Since I was running my machine through an Ethernet connection, connected to an access point, I could remove the Anatel card in my computer and still have an internet connection. I tried it, and my computer a Gateway FX6860 updated to Windows 10 Fall Creators version without any problems.

Check to see if you have an Anatel wifi card and remove it and replace it with something newer or an Ethernet or usb connection to the internet and try the update. this worked for me.

BTW - I've tried, unsuccessfully, for over an hour JUST to download the media creation tool.

Microsoft has screwed up royally with this one. They need to fix the updater. Don't ask us to jump through hoops.

Dude,

You are a genius and a lifesaver. After multiple hours of trying to update windows 10. After countless phone calls with Microsoft technical support. After browsing through tons of windows forums. All it took was a genius named James to figure out that the problem was with the stupid Anatel wifi card.

Microsoft should fire all their useless technical support people and just hire you instead.

P.s. did anyone have the same issue where microsoft support will fill out the comments card prior to logging out of a remote session. In one instance, this support person logged on to my computer, filled out the support card and immediately logged off without attempting to fix my issue.

I have a Gateway ZX-4451. Seems like every update has been a nightmare. After finding this thread, I was finally able to update to 1709. Thank you to the person that posted the solution. Stupid updates keep forcing the install even when it fails at 81%. The dumb part is it re-downloads every time (what a waste of bandwidth and time). Been trying to install this update for 2 months now. Anyways, I ripped the all-in-one computer apart and removed the WIFI adapter. Mine was a Ralink RT3090. Ran the install, it stayed at 81% for almost 7 hours (before removing the card, it would freeze up at 81% after about an hour and then go blank) but finally went through. I imagine for those that aren't comfortable with removing hardware, you can probably just go into the BIOS and disable the adapter.
