Volume bar won't go away/volume stuck at 100

For the past 6 days the volume bar has not gone away. I try to turn down the volume, but it gradually goes back to 100. The bar gets in the way, and the volume is way too loud. I've seen other people have had this same problem, but I haven't found a solution. I've restarted my computer, I've downloaded an updated audio driver, I've held down the audio buttons on my keyboard, but nothing helps.

I have a Windows 10, Inspiron 15-7579, 64 bit.

I just searched the interned for hours only to discover that it's not a software issue, but that there is a volume button on the side of the computer next to the power that I never noticed and it was STUCK. That was definitely my problem. It's still kind of stuck for me, but at least the volume icon went away. Hope this helps.

Use the function keys on the top of the device keyboard . I pressed Esc, F1 , F2, F3, F4 , F5 in sequence and the volume bar went away. I tried to get it back but it did not come back . I do not miss it though but felt great to get rid of it. Happy computing guys.

Thank you for the clarification. To further isolate the issue, I suggest that you try to boot your computer to safe mode. This way we'd be able to check the integrity of your hardware. If the issue persists, I would suggest that you create a new user profile and name it as test. This is to check the PowerShell of your current user profile if it is intact.

Please don't hesitate to keep me posted with the results.

    Thank you for your reply.

I did try the clean boot but was not successful in isolating the service that was the issue.  I think I did it wrong and initially turned off too many services.  The volume bar was gone until I reinstated all the services.  But I have been messing around with my computer since I posted my message.

As I said, I have been having all kinds of issues with my computer in addition to the volume bar problem.  I don’t know if they are related or if it’s just a coincidence.  My computer was largely unusable with all the issues I was having.  So I did a computer reset, the full reset option that you would select if you were recycling your computer.  I was going to try creating a windows media file to run a windows repair, but I have not been successful getting that created from another computer.  After the reset, I updated windows to the most current version and then I updated the drivers for Intel® Display Audio and Realtek High Definition Audio and that didn’t fix it either.   I currently have the High Definition Audio disabled so there’s no sound and that does remove the volume bar in the upper left corner.

I currently have no other users on this computer.  The volume bar shows up upon logon to the computer.  I am also currently getting a lot of those blue screens with the unhappy face that states there was an issue starting my computer and it needs to restart again.  I also had to try the reset a couple of times before I could get that to run, it failed a few times and then backed out all changes.  I did not try running in Safe Mode.

So that about sums up where I’m at.  Do you have other questions?  What should I try next?

    Thank you.

    Hi SuzanneAubrey,

There are a few possibilities that we'll need to sort out in order to determine if this is more of a hardware issue or a software issue that you experience with your computer. In order to determine what approach would be best to apply, I would like to know the following:

    • Have you tried performing a clean boot on your computer like what was suggested on the previous post?
    • Is the issue happening on a different user profile?
    • When do you get the volume bar, is it upon the computer starting up or is it when you change the volume?
    • Have you tried running your computer on safe mode?

I'll be waiting for your response to better assist you.
