Windows 10 re-opens all programs after shutdown / restart?

Running Windows 10 Pro, v1790, build 16299.19

After a recent Windows update my computer now re-opens all programs I had open prior to restarting.

I've seen some registry hacks and workarounds on the internet but I just want the option to turn this off natively within Windows without workarounds.

How do I do this?

    nope, i've never had hibernate enabled. i have to use shortcuts to shut down without saving state. stupid workaround, but it works.

    You're a genius! And then there are the Microsoft employees saying it can't be done :D. OK, maybe the feature to disable it was implemented very recently :).

    I recently upgraded to an SSD and thought I was going crazy because my PC was taking 7-8 minutes to boot! 

    I followed this:

    Go to Settings - Accounts - Sign-in 

    Go to Privacy and turn this option off 'Use my sign info to automatically finish setting up'

    Now my boot time is 4-6 seconds.

    Why would there not be a user-friendly off switch for this?

    Agreed and seconded....

    Why in earth does MS feel the need to change stuff that does not need changing?  That's the problem with WIN 10: It ties us more into MS than the older versions. E.g.: WIN Mail...

    Yeah, still sitting here sick of my laptop taking 10 minutes to load because it's trying to load all my previously open programs... IT'S A GOD DAMN 5400RPM DRIVE!

    Not to mention windows 10 being very slow at loading windows 10 on laptops without ssd's now anyway because some genius thought it was a good idea for windows 10 to use 100% of the drive all the time.
