We couldn't finish installing updates (KB4074588), error 0x80070bc2

Hi.

I'm unable to install the latest windows update 2018-02 Cumulative update for Windows 10 version  1709 for x64-based Systems.

The error is 0x80070bc2

It says updates are available, awaiting restart. When I restart it fails. "We couldn't finish updates.." Then says updates are available, awaiting restart. I restart again and it fails again. Over and over.

I tried using windows update troubleshooter, the tool performed its fixes but it had no effect.

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks

(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

The "start=auto" trick did not work for me.  (Windows 10, same error code as mentioned above.) I tried a couple of other things too.  Very frustrating!  It reboots at least every day now.  I have a similar, if not the exact same, problem on a Win 7 laptop as well.

I just changed my "active hours" so that it'll at least stop rebooting while I'm doing something, but I'd rather it not keep rebooting.

on ur windows 7 u could try running the diagcam repair tool from Microsoft,i don't think u can use it on windows 10,but whenever I have an issue on 7 I run that and it does tend to fix it.its a different tool to usual ones.

UPDATE:  It worked! I think.  For some reason, after setting to "Auto" it reverted to Manual, so I set it to Auto again and rebooted again, and it started actually installing!  So, it sounds weird, but that's my story.

I tried the same solution for my Win 7 laptop, and it did not help, but that's understandable -- different OS, different update, different install error.  Still maddening!  Still looking for a solution on that one....

    Anyway, thanks Paul!
