We couldn't finish installing updates (KB4074588), error 0x80070bc2

Hi.

I'm unable to install the latest windows update 2018-02 Cumulative update for Windows 10 version  1709 for x64-based Systems.

The error is 0x80070bc2

It says updates are available, awaiting restart. When I restart it fails. "We couldn't finish updates.." Then says updates are available, awaiting restart. I restart again and it fails again. Over and over.

I tried using windows update troubleshooter, the tool performed its fixes but it had no effect.

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks

(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

Regarding your laptop, someone kindly replied to my post on page 2:

    Read the details:

"Even though the update was successfully installed, Windows Update incorrectly reports that the update failed to install. Select Check for Updates to confirm that there are no additional updates available.

You can also type About your PC in the search box on the taskbar to confirm that your device is using the expected OS build.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release."

This is on MS to fix."

Hope this clarifies it for you and anyone else who was wondering. And yes the latest OS  is  version 1709 build number 16299.248.

    Hi,

I used the SC config trustedinstaller start=auto and it did install....something.  During the first restart it said installing stage 1 of 61, installing features. The next time that I restarted it said stage 1 of 60 and so on.  I restarted it 60 more times and guess what?  The 2018-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4074588) still says "Requires a restart to finish installing".  So, that is where I was at 61 restarts ago.  The computer boots up now without installing anything whether I use the command prompt or not.  So I went through all of the stages of installing something...evidently wasn't KB4074588.

I have tried the windows update troubleshooter and using the command prompt.  Funny thing is that I have a laptop that had 1607 on it and now it is 1709 with the updates and KB4074588 installed just fine. Also, interestingly, according to the Update Status, the device is up to date even though when you go to the update history it still says that a restart is required to finish the update. My version is the most current though, 16299.248.  So maybe there is something else going on.  Maybe it is actually installed but the system is just not reading it correctly in the update history.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks
