We couldn't finish installing updates (KB4074588), error 0x80070bc2

Hi.

I'm unable to install the latest windows update 2018-02 Cumulative update for Windows 10 version  1709 for x64-based Systems.

The error is 0x80070bc2

It says updates are available, awaiting restart. When I restart it fails. "We couldn't finish updates.." Then says updates are available, awaiting restart. I restart again and it fails again. Over and over.

I tried using windows update troubleshooter, the tool performed its fixes but it had no effect.

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks

(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

My build of Win10 64bit Pro is 16299.192.  When I enter 'CMD' I get a pop-up window saying best match is 'Command Prompt' Desktop App.  When I select that App I get a text box but right clicking the Command Prompt does not offer a "run as administrator" option.

I am also in the pool of people having D/L issues with KB4074588 (never downloads) and KB4057291 which claims it is waiting to install.

    Any suggestions?

From the Windows icon, go to Settings and then Update & security and then Windows Update.

Take a screenshot of this page.

Then click on View installed update history and take a screenshot of that page.

Add them both to a reply here.

    Paul,

No, this did not solve the issue.    The system continues to show me a message stating Awaiting restart

The update still has not completed it's installation and sadly, nothing has changed.

This has update and the issues around it have completely messed up my computer.

Every single time it starts up or restarts, it wants to download this update yet again.    Then when trying to use the computer everything seems to be running slow, or there's too many things running, considering how many times it has gone through the download process and how many things I've used to try to repair the damage.

Something is desperately wrong and it all started when this ridiculous update came along.

I'm at my wit's end!   Trying to resolve this has actually reduced me to tears a few times :-(

    Please, please help!

I was having the same problem on a Compaq Presario laptop

which had been running Win 10 very nicely until the last two updates had failed to install via normal MS Update mechanisms. Trouble code was the same as above.

I tried troubleshooters with no clear improvement then used the downloadable module to wipe the cache which it did then I rebooted and downloaded the Cumulative update file (msi) from the Microsoft Update Catalogue. The manual installation proceeded well and am now waiting as the installer gives me notices of "Stage 1 of 25 Getting Windows Ready/ setting up updates/Don't turn off your Computer" Stage 2 is now up so there seems clear method to the madness.

My experience was that manual download and install was the key breakthrough apart from clearing the cache of the other versions of the failed downloads.

Personally I think it is outrageous Microsoft is so non-communicative about such glaring problems taking place pretty much on a monthly basis. Someone isn't coordinating the releases right.

The impression this gives me honestly is that the "everything for everybody" model being used is just too damn complicated to ever reach any sort of relative "completion"

Anyway laptop is now giving notification of update 100% complete and is doing final restart. We shall see!

Ok checked updates and yes the update is up and running....
