We couldn't finish installing updates (KB4074588), error 0x80070bc2

Hi.

I'm unable to install the latest windows update 2018-02 Cumulative update for Windows 10 version  1709 for x64-based Systems.

The error is 0x80070bc2

It says updates are available, awaiting restart. When I restart it fails. "We couldn't finish updates.." Then says updates are available, awaiting restart. I restart again and it fails again. Over and over.

I tried using windows update troubleshooter, the tool performed its fixes but it had no effect.

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks

(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

I did the above and when I restarted my Surface Pro 4 Tablet I couldn't get into Update & security. So I did Restart again and then the Screen message was 'Stage 2 of 2' then it went onto the update.

Currently hanging in the Startup blue screen

I followed your instructions. After the SECOND reboot, an update WAS installed; it took 10 minutes. Checking in UPDATE & SECURITY, it still states "FAILED," however, when I check for available updates, it states that my PC is "up to date." Am I all set? I've been on WINDOWS since 1997, and this is the first time I've ever had any sort of problem with UPDATE! BTW: thanks a lot for your very clear instructions!

    Hi all,

I just want to add an extra step to this. I had to restart my laptop twice as mentioned above. The first time nothing happened. The second time, the windows applied all the required changes before entering to the main screen. However when I looked under Settings > Update & Security the message was still there telling me that needs to restart the laptop. I clicked the "restart now" button (which means the laptop was restarted three times in total) and only then the message disappeared. The new message was "Your device is up to date. last checked ...".

So to conclude, it looks that the user needs to restart the machine twice (there is no "in some cases") and then restart it from the settings menu for a successful installation.!

    Regards,

    Stefanos
