SIM PIN2 to unlock mobile broadband device

My new Laptop is a Lenovo T470s (S/N PC0PXLX1) with a "Sierra Wireless EM7455 Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A" WWAN card.

After working well for 6 weeks, I am now unable to get an internet connection using that adapter.

Windows 10 network diagnostics tells me I need to "Enter a SIM PIN2 to unlock the mobile broadband device". I can find no way to enter anything.

Tech support at both AT&T and Lenovo have never heard of SIM PIN2 and each blames the other for the problem. I have talked to each several times and have been referred to "advanced tech support."

My internet provider is AT&T.

This community has referred to a "provider specific software" that solved one participant's similar problem.

My provider, AT&T, has given me two PUK numbers. I suspect their PUK2 may be the SIM PIN2, but I still have no way to utilize that information.

HELP!

What finally worked for me was installing the manufacturer's WAN card software.  What this actually did was update the firmware on the WAN card.  Once this firmware was updated, everything worked like a charm.

You will have to select your carrier and either Windows or Linux and you may have to create an account to drill down but its free.

I've been having the same problem the last year or more.  I don't use the cellular connection often but this time I decided to find out why it wasn't working.  I have a Thinkpad P50 with Windows 10 and the latest Windows updates.  I downloaded and installed Lenovo's latest WAN drivers.  After calling Verizon Wireless support and enabling/disabling options, rebooting, changing the sim pin, etc. it worked for a day.  Verizon support at least tried sincerely to resolve the issue.  The next day however I was back to clicking on the Cellular button and nothing happening.  Clicking on the Wi-Fi, Airplane Mode and Mobile Hotspot buttons toggled on/off as they should.  Next I called the clowns at Lenovo support (which is where the buck should stop) with little help.  They knew little to none about the internal WAN card that was part of the original purchase from Lenovo directly.  The support person asked a series of questions from a prewritten list.  I could see the questions were geared to trying to say this internal WAN card was an aftermarket upgrade and not their responsibility, however I stuck to my guns.  I could not get the case elevated to the next level.  Their final solution was to send a replacement WAN card since I had onsite service.  In the mean time I started searching the Internet seeing I wasn't alone with this issue and that many others have been having the same problem for a few years.  What finally worked for me was installing the manufacturer's WAN card  software.  What this actually did was update the firmware on the WAN card.  Once this firmware was updated, everything worked like a charm.

You will have to select your carrier and either Windows or Linux and you may have to create an account to drill down but its free.  My frustration is that Lenovo support should have figured this out and not me especially since this has been an ongoing problem with many others.

Tried most of the suggestions here and elsewhere.

I've got a Lenovo T470s and EM7455. And as everyone else, after W10 Fall Creators Update no more.

The best I can get is with a driver from 2016-Sept-28 Vers 16.9.2.8. With this driver the device shows up as Sierra Wireless EM7455 Qualcomm Snapdragon X7 LTE-A. Great. When installing it also applies SWI9X30C_02.24.05.06 (2017-May-19) FirmWare for the modem as well, even if I have (had) the latest SWI9X..._02.30.01.01 (18-July-13) taken from Sierra's site.

Windows claims it has the latest driver, at least it has a higher version number then neither Lenovo nor Sierra has on their drivers. So no, it wont install (easy). Downloading and running Lenovo's latest only results in Windows own generic mobile broadband driver is back.

Sierras latest driver for EM7455 downloads, unpacks and says that there is no modem that is compatible in the download.

    Neither do Lenovo's driver.

Forcing a driver update to Sierra's latest causes the driver to install, but cannot start (errcode 10).

Enabled COM-ports on EM7455 to confirm current FW and status is ok. Modem on COM5, NMEA on COM6, DM on COM4 and QDLoader on COM3.

'ipconfig' reports a correct IP-address and gateway, but doing a 'ping <ip-address> results in "PING: transmit failed. General failure." Never ever seen before... Troubleshooting says "Enter a SIM PIN2 to unlock the mobile broadband device". Well, this is probably a miss-interpretation of some code that is returned. The modem works fine, connects fine and receives an IP/GW/network info.

There is nothing wrong with the SIM. It works in other devices. And - running a live-debian9 has the modem work perfect with working internet. In this very same computer!

I read somewhere that this problem started with KB4056892. May very well be so, uninstalling it has no effect.

What would the procedure to confirm that the reported device is (or not) a compatible device for the .inf-file in question?

I'm thinking what would be interresting to know is what the actual hardware (EM7455) is reported as when for instance the latest network driver from Lenovo is a specific one for 7455 (filename says: swsd017455i.inf) so how can it not be meant for being a driver to this same EM7455?? So how can it not find a proper driver??

Is the latest driver from Sierra Wireless suitable for Lenovo (T470s)? What is making the driver from Lenovo better? OR as Windows claims that the existing driver already is the best???

And of course I have tried all deleting/uninstalling the device, removing windows driver, reinstalled with Lenovo/Sierra drivers first and then reboot and all I think I've read is done. And probably not, since some folks seems to have made it working!?!

Some tech-support guy suggested to reinstall Windows. Hm, well, yes, for the first days of updating the system it will work, until it comes to later updates. And other previous problems has required some of the updates coming later on to work, so No. I wont reinstall Win10 for now. That would demand a new disk to play with in such case.

All this of removing the modem card and reinstall it. Why? Debian works fine. Is it to force Windows reinstall it?

    Bla bla bla.

This has gone far too long now. I'm very close to give up on this.

    /Carl

    Hi Andre,

I would like to follow up if you're still having this issue. If yes, I highly suggest that you contact your mobile network provider for further assistance. They have the necessary resources and tools to setup your cellular network.

Feel free to post back should you have further concerns.
