Your device needs the latest security updates...big time error.

Yesterday, I got the notification "Your device needs the latest security updates" and an update window that couldn't be closed, but could be minimized to the tray.  It spent hours to reach 100%, so I left it running overnight.  I get up this morning, it reappears, does the same thing again...but then "restoring your version of Windows" appears on the restart and now it's downloading again.  Is anyone else struggling with this, because it seems seriously bugged and stuck in a viscous cycle.

What I did was to uninstall it, reinstall it, uninstall it again and then do a disk cleanup and then manually remove the last remains of the programme directories.  It hasn't reappeared since.

    Me to on all.  I have uninstalled as much of the update system as I dare and more than I understand and will be defending my version 14393 any way I can.  I figure that if I can just keep defender up to date it will probably be easier to sort out the odd bit malware that to deal with this update which, as far as I can see, is Microsoft's version of a virus.

    The only solution I know of to break out of the infinite repair loop is to Clean Install Windows 10 1709 from USB ISO ...assuming your device is compatible with 1709...best to contact the manufacturer first.

    I have tried assisting people with this infinite loop problem and haven't been successful.  The only solution is the clean installation...and this is regrettable.

    My recommendation to users going forward is not to pounce on every new Windows 10 Feature Update that is released. If your system has been working just fine with the current version, wait it out a while or skip it all together. If there is some specific feature in the update you want, then thats an exception, but these feature updates are becoming more difficult to install on older devices; and it sometimes makes you wonder if the inconvenience is worth the hassle just to keep doing the same thing. 

    If you look at whats considered the flagship features of Windows 10 1709, they are aimed at newer generation devices like the new Surface Book 2. Otherwise welcome features like Story Remix, which you have to upgrade to 1709 to get, could be supplanted with third party alternatives. 

    That said, you probably could wait a few months then try upgrading again.

    You can also try upgrading to an earlier release such as 1703 or 1607 and see if that upgrades successfully. You can download the ISO's at the following link:
