I have this problem.  After the latest win10 update i get the login screen with photo image and the invite to login.  Iuse my pin to login and press return, windows then goes through the process of booting but comes up with a black screen with the mouse pointer that i can move around.

I have tried safe mode  but thesame thing happens. I just can not get into windows at all.  All ‘fixes’ assume you can get into windows safe mode, all i can get into is safe mode command prompt.

    please help

    Andre

    Hi,

There may be several reasons why you may encounter a black screen after an update. One of which may be caused by an incompatible graphics card driver. It may also be caused by a corrupted system file. To better assist you and provide you with the appropriate troubleshooting steps, kindly answer the questions below:

    • Are you able to see the sign in screen and login?
    • Are you able to see the Start menu, task bar, and your desktop icons?
    • Have you tried performing any troubleshooting steps?

We'll be looking forward for your response.

After I login into system, it shows black screen with cursor. I cannot see the desktop or any other startup menus. I tried using sticky keys, I reached the control panel and tried system restore, but no use. It says svchost.exe application error. And still after continuing it comesback to the same point with black screen and cursor.. help me friends.

Have you tried an in-place upgrade using Microsoft Windows Creation Tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10.  Download the tool and then choose the option to do an upgrade while keeping your files and apps.  When it's done your computer should work unless you have a hardware issue.

I've got this problem as well since the install of 1709. There is absolutely nothing but a black screen and moveable cursor. There is no access to Ctrl-Alt-Del.   There were no other changes to the system prior to the 1709 update.

My issue is that I can not let my computer sleep at all. If I do, I have no other option but to hard reset it. When I do restart it I have access to my normal system. I have tried all of the suggestions in this thread, Disabling AppReadiness does not work. My bios is the latest version, I have tried different graphics driver versions, I have done both of the DISM and SFC processes. The only solution I have found is to set the power option 'Sleep' to never but this is not a satisfactory solution.

My machine is a Lenovo e540.
