I have been struggling with this issue for well over a month, It first started with the "2018-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4090913)". Now its update Tuesday and this months cumulative update (KB4088776) is doing the exact same thing.

I have tried all 5 of the steps provided by microsofts here:                            (More than once)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/910336/windows-update-error-0x80070002-or-0x80070003

Finally, I have done a clean install of windows 10 three times now in the past couple of weeks, to no prevail.

After each fresh install. the exact same issue.

I am running Windows 10 Pro Education, Version 1709, build 16299.15.

After each install it seems to update no problem, but seems to only be an issue once I reactivate my Windows 10 Pro Activation key.

I gave up weeks ago, and was hoping my problem would simply be solved by the latest update, but that is not the case.

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had exactly the same problems since January.  I did the "SC Config Trustedinstaller Start=Auto" then ran WUShowHide.diagcab to release KB4088776 that was hidden then Restarted.  The system came back up and WU started downloading again but took much longer than before.  Then it automatically Restarted and began installing ALL the updates for the past 2 months.  It took over an hour and automatically Restarted numerous times.  When it finally was done WU Installed Updates still showed KB4088776 as having failed with (6) tries but Uninstall Updates show 5 installed updates with todays date and KB4088776 was the most recent.  Check for updates says I am up to date.

Using Task Manager Services tab I checked Trustedinstaller and it says Stopped.  So I am not sure if the "SC" keyin will have to be done again or not.  But that is what I will try if WU gets hung up again.

    Thanks

I am not a 'techie' just want a PC that runs windows 10 and updates without me having to spend hours tinkering with things I don't really understand.  Come on Microsoft, pull your finger out and help me (and 1000's of others with the same problem).

I don't know the answer.  But the question concerns the failure of Windows Updates to install
