File History Not Backing Up OneDrive Local Files

Running 16299.19 on new Surface Pro. I have about 15GB of OneDrive files synched to my local HDD. I have unchecked the "files on demand" button so that files are actually synched locally; however, when File History runs, it does not include those files in the backup. I have added my OneDrive folder to my Documents library, and I have included the OneDrive directory in the included folders through Windows settings. When I make changes to OneDrive files, they seem to be backed up incrementally; however, it is not making an initial backup, so there is no way I could do a complete restore if something happened to all of my OneDrive files.

I have tried disconnecting my OneDrive account, deleting all local OneDrive files, turning off file history, deleting file history files and setup files, reconnecting OneDrive, and turning File History back on. I have also tried turning on File History before re-connecting my OneDrive account.

I have copied the email they sent me below.  I was able to see the green check marks and having reset OneDrive it didn't restart so I had to run the final task.  Then all was and still is well.

  • Are you able to see the green check marks on all the files/folders in OneDrive folder of file explorer?

Try resetting your OneDrive in windows 10 computer:-

  • Press the Windows key + R.
  • In the Run window, enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure the OneDrive icon in the notification area of the taskbar disappears and then re-appears after a minute or two. Here’s how to check: Right-click the white OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar.

(You might need to click the Show hidden icons arrow next to the notification area to see the

OneDrive icon.)

  • If the OneDrive icon doesn’t re-appear after a few minutes, open the Run window again and enter: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

I am no expert and may have misunderstood the results of the actions the OneDrive team advised.  My OneDrive files that I have altered are now backed up, but it has not copied all my OneDrive files initially.  As I don't have many files on OneDrive I have altered all of them, allowed File History to perform a backup then changed them back to their original state.  I'm sorry if I confused the issue.

    Hi Joseph,

I wanted to come back on this.

As you'll be able to see three (3) new users have reported the same behavior with their Windows 10 installation following the upgrade to the Fall Creators Update, within 24 hours on this thread.

In addition, there is three (3) up votes on my item of Feedback within the Feedback Hub app.

Therefore this is an issue with a growing number of installations.

Can you please find what is happening within Microsoft in terms of an investigation into what is happening?  Please can you also advise when this will be resolved?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Kind regards,

    Neil

    Hi Joseph,

I would like to say thank you for coming back on this.  I'm afraid that what you have suggested hasn't worked and the issue which is caused by the upgrade to the Fall Creators Update still exists.

I can confirm that when I performed the operations with the SFC and DISM tool last week, I booted the machine in the 'Clean Boot' state, as this is part of what I do prior to running the tools.  So this didn't work.

I will be running another SFC and DISM utilities in a Clean Boot state following the installation of the new Cumulative Update that Microsoft is scheduled to be released on the 14th of November (Patch Tuesday).  I will most likely install this on the weekend of the 17th, 18th and 19th of November - as I'm travelling during the week and staying in a hotel with a captive and capped wifi network.  So I will need to wait until I get home with a faster network.

I am unable to roll back to the previous Build of Windows 10 - the Creators Update, as I got rid of the Previous Version of Windows, using the Disk Clean Up utility.  I did this before realising that the File History component is ignoring the local OneDrive replicas.  Therefore this is not possible.

I can confirm that I logged a piece of Feedback last week prior to commenting on this thread and I stated this and included the URL for it.  For completeness, it is here - https://aka.ms/C4vg1h

I am not prepared to perform a Restore of the system at this time, as all else is working fine and you've not currently provided sufficient support or ideas to justify this course of action.

This piece of feedback has been up voted twice in the last week.  So this issue is appearing to be across a number of people's machines.  I see that five people are watching this thread and two are watching my Feedback.  Therefore this is becoming a wide spread issue.

Can I ask - Are you a Microsoft employee?  Your badge says that you are.  Can I ask you escalate this with your contacts at Microsoft?

    I have seen at this time, there isn't any available CUs at this following URL;

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4043454

With the above in mind.  Can I please ask for you for your next suggestions and updates within Microsoft to get this resolved?

As I keep saying, all was well within the Creators Update - this issue has only started following the upgrade to the Fall Creators Update.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Kind regards,

    Neil
