(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

    Thank you.

    I don't know if I am experiencing  0x80070bc2 error.

The only message I see is **Windows could not complete the installation.  To install Windows on this computer , restart the installation.**And believe me I have restarted it many times.

I am unable to do the commands you suggest because the restart the installation box will not  close and I have no  access to the task bar to enter any commands.  I cannot even shut the laptop off.  I do not have a very high level of knowledge so if anyone plans to help me I'll need a lot of guidance.

    Don't worry.

Microsoft has acknowledged that there is a bug in their update software.

They are working to fix it.

I am told this may take two months.

    Be patient.

You can shut the computer off by pressing and holding the power button until the computer shuts down.

    Paul...

Thanks so much. This resolved my issue with update KB4074588 on Windows 10 1709 constantly looping and advising a restart to update. I would restart and it advised it hadn't updated and I needed a restart - nearly gave in after trying all the MS solutions re troubleshooting and installing stand alone none of which worked.
