Error 0x80070bc2 during installation KB4074588

I hope you managed to solve your issue, but in case not I had exactly the same problem yesterday on one of my Windows 10 laptops which had Windows 10 version 1709 build 16299.248 on it and KB4088776 was continually failing to install with automatic updates. None of the earlier suggestions in this thread worked for me. I managed to solve the issue in the following way:

1. I downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation tool (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209) to my desktop.
2. I downloaded the latest quality update (http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4089848) as suggested by a previous poster in this thread, to my desktop.
3. I ran the media creation tool and chose the option to update Windows 10 on my laptop, not the option to create ISO media.
4. The tool started to run checking the computer for compatibility and then asked what to keep in the existing installation (the option to keep existing files and apps was selected by default and I left it that way).
5. After the tool had finished installing Windows 10 I was left with a clean install of the Windows 10 Fall Creator's Update (the version checker tool reported version 1709 build 16299.125), and all my drivers, apps and files were intact and untouched.
6. I then disabled wifi/internet and manually installed the KB4089848 quality update, which installed fine (but took a long time to install).
7. The version checker app then reported my Windows 10 version as 1709 build 16299.334.

I'll warn this is quite a long procedure - it took a few hours from beginning to end on my Iaptop. I also recommend you clone your hard drive as a backup before attempting the procedure...just in case.

but what I did on a Surface that had issues after I got back to .125

1- joined Insiders Program Fast Ring

2- restarted

3- got Insiders 17133 installed (many think this is the release that will be

offered soon to everyone for the 1803 update. it will probably get a couple of

cumulative updates soon as well before release and if not it is really really

stable.

4 - this took care of all the weirdness. If I see a cumulative update for 17133

in the near future, that would confirm it is the release and on that machine I

will then stop insiders builds. I thought it worth the chance that 17133 was

"it" and if it isn't, it is very stable.

obviously, do the above at your own risk..

you uninstall and block it and wait for the next cumulative update. I hate

recommending this, but the other options are a wipe and reinstall with no

guarantee that it won't occur again.
