(Update - 2/17 Editing for clarity based on feedback)

If you are currently experiencing the 0x80070bc2 error while attempting to install KB4074588, please try this:

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt in the search results and select Run as administrator.  (Select Yes, when prompted by the User Account Control.)
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto 4. Restart the PC.

In some cases, a second restart may be required. If you look under Settings > Update & security and you see the message Status: Awaiting restart, restart the PC a second time to complete the installation.

After month of endless restart it finally worked thanks to you!

    What exactly did you do?

I executed the command sc config trustedinstaller start=auto

    I got the response, "SUCCESS"

I restarted the computer at least ten times.

I still get the error message, "unable to install" with the same error code.

    Masood,

I don't work for Microsoft but I will try to assist you. I know you are angry and frustrated and I will do my best to assist.

Start with the Windows Update Trouble shooter https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/402732...

If this does not fix the issue, we will need to check your system for corruption. To do this:

    In the Cortana/Search field, type:

    CMD

    Right click on CMD

    Click Run as administrator

Type in at the prompt OR Copy and Paste these one at a time : (Hit enter after each)

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

When this completes, run the System File Checker utility:

    In the Cortana/Search field, type:

    CMD

    Right click on CMD

    Click Run as administrator

    At the Command Prompt, type:

    sfc/scannow

This checks for any integrity violations

    Restart your system

If there still are issues after performing all of this, we will continue to assist. Please don't give up. This may take some time. And if the above does not work, we may end up recommending a complete reimage, so it would be best to back up local files and data stored on your Surface.

Sorry you are having these issues.
