Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

    (1) Make Win 10 Installation Media.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Download Windows 10 - Currently, this is v.1803

Make a Windows 10 Installation USB drive or burn an ISO to DVD. As the site says, match it to your Edition (Home, Pro, etc.), Language, & Architecture (x64/64-bit or x86/32-bit) of the computer on which it will be used. This may be used to do a clean install or a repair-install. Also, it comes with its own recovery environment (Choose an Option screen).

    (1) Backed up your files & downloads to external media.

    (a) Plug in the Win 10 Installation Media. Also plug in a USB drive on which to copy files.

    (b) Boot to the Installation Media through the BIOS Boot Menu. You press a key during boot at the manufacturer's logo screen. Find your key here...

    https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/23010-get-access-bios-settings-boot-menu-f-keys-hotkeys-system-manufacturer-oem.html

Get access to BIOS settings & Boot Menu: F-keys/Hotkeys by System Manufacturer (OEM)

Note: That's a 3rd-party site. The literature is good. I know nothing of any downloads or links at that site.

    (c) When the Installation media boots, get to the 2nd screen, & click "Repair your computer". This will boot to the Recovery Environment (of the Installation media) at the "Choose an option" screen.

    (d) Click "Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt".

         A DOS box will open.

    (e) Enter "Notepad" into the DOS box. It will open in full GUI mode.

    (f) Select "Open" from Notepad's File menu.

    (g) At the bottom right of the Open requestor, set it to read All Files...

    (h) Now all files should show up. Don't try to open any of them except maybe text files. But browse to - especially - "C:\Users<Username>", right-click it in the left pane, & select "Copy". Then click the letter of the USB drive in the left pane (not the one that holds the Installation media). Right-click in the right pane, & select "Paste". Do the same for "C:\Windows.old\Users<Username>", if it exists. That would get all the stuff of the user. I guess you could be more selective, & just take the subfolders that hold your data.

    (I) Close the "Open" requestor, Notepad, & the DOS box.

This gets back to the Choose an Option screen. Unplug the USB external storage drive.

    (j) I guess try "Troubleshoot > Reset This PC".

Be sure to keep all files & apps, if it mercifully asks the question.

If that fails to fix things, then a formal clean install is in the offing.

same problem here - if anyone is thinking of a class action suit count me in! My PC is stuck in the choose a keyboard loop after windows decided to update it. (I had specifically chosen to update later but it chose it's own time). I haven't tried resetting my PC yet as it will mean reloading all the other programs I need for work - hours of time wasted - unpaid!

Agreed.  Has anyone called customer service/tech support?  Not their fault, but bad instruction to tell the same thing-- wait 24 to 48 hours, try again, call back....One of the support technicians actually sighed deeply throughout our conversation in response to my frustration (I continued to reiterate I knew it wasn't his fault but I need to have this resolved and to save my files).  After about a week of this, I was told last night to set up an ethernet cable (which I didn't have handy-- who does???) and that I could call back for help in installing the operating system through the website.  When I called back to continue I was told that I could not get help with this over the phone as they could get in trouble for helping me in case I lost my files, so I need to make an appointment and go in person to the Microsoft store (about a 30-minute drive from my home).

I am beside myself.  I use this laptop for work and have things set up a very specific way to ensure that I can do my work efficiently and effectively.  Yesterday I needed to do work outside of the home and was unable to because I can't do this kind of work through my phone.

I will lose at least a day setting things up the same way again.

Microsoft, how are you going to make this right?  Otherwise, I am going to have to switch to Mac, something I never thought I'd say...
