Windows 10 rollback stuck

A client of mine has a Windows 10 desktop she bought a couple of years ago. Last week a user (we think her grandson) tried to rollback to a previous version of Windows. But, since Windows 10 is the original OS on the computer, it's stuck. Asks for keyboard language, then gives options to run Windows rollback or Windows 10. When you choose, it reboots and goes right back to the keyboard options. How can I get past this and fix the issue?

Hi Andrea,

Corrupted system files after trying to rollback are one of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. Usually, restarting the computer should resolve the issue.

If the issue still persists even after restarting your computer, we recommend repairing Windows thru Advanced options. Follow the steps below:

  1. Press F8 while booting your computer to access System Recovery options.
  2. Click Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Command Prompt.
  4. Enter the following commands below, then press Enter after each command:
    • chkdsk c: /f
    • bootrec /fixmbr
    • bootrec /fixboot
    • bootrec /rebuildbcd
    • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:
  5. Once done with the above commands, restart your computer and see if the problem is fixed.

    It looks like you are doing a clean install - not a repair install.

    (1) Did you boot to the Installation Media through the BIOS Boot Menu?

    (2) Is the BIOS in UEFI mode or Legacy mode?

    (3) Were you given a UEFI choice to boot the Installation Media?

    I don't like the error message complaining of GPT style. It makes me think the media was booted in Legacy mode & it expects to find an MBR disk. But it found GPT. You should straighten that out before proceeding. I think that would mean...

    (a) Go back into BIOS.

    (b) Set it for UEFI.

    (c) Boot the Installation Media using the UEFI Boot Menu choice.

    Once it is straightened out...

    I think - if you select the Primary partition & click "Next" - it will give you a clean install. All 3rd-party apps will be wiped. I'm unsure whether it will ask whether to keep files. If not, those will be wiped too. But the current version of Windows should end up in C:\Windows.old, & that should include all the files.

    But - for a true clean install - you would select & delete all of those partitions one after the other - except maybe the Lenovo partition. That one could be used to get the computer back to factory state. After deleting the top 4 partitions, you would select the empty/unallocated space created & click "Next". Then, for sure all 3rd-party apps & files will be wiped. And there will be no Windows.old.

    If you have any success please let me know.  I have had no luck, my computer has nothing just a black screen can't even get internet.  More than pi****d off.

    How do you fix the wondows rollback issue?  Computer is in endless reboot.

    Hello everyone! I've been screwed over by this update as well. I think I managed to somehow get myself into an even bigger mess. I don't exactly remember what I did, but I think I chose to boot up a different version of windows 10. I think the option was under the windows rollback button (no pictures, sorry) and it went through an update. After the update, I was able to login after receiving a system warning. Now I'm stuck with a version of windows that's invalid (even though the year and a half I've had it it's worked perfectly fine and was bought onto the computer). And on top of the limited privileges an invalid copy of Windows has, my task bar is trashed. The start menu is inaccessible. Now, mind you, I'm not a college student, nor am I someone who has any work related files on my computer. The most things of value I have are my old drawings and Corel Painter 5. Quite frankly, at this point, I just want to put it out of its misery and reset my windows, but I'm unable to. I've seen the method with using f8 while booting, but my computer doesn't respond to that. Another problem is, is that the affected computer is our only computer that has a connection to the internet. I'm honestly sorry for the long read, but I've decided to try my luck here first, just to see if anyone has a solution to this. I figured this would be the best place to start, since Microsoft has been dead silent about this issue. Thanks!
